Jack BoWen Heiar is a husband, father, and former pet owner. The dynamics between his busy family and the family's pets gave him the inspiration to write The Long Ball.
The story begins with a night-time meeting between two creatures of vastly different size and disposition. Somehow they have become friends reading each others minds as they communicate about the pack (it's travels, it's games, it's problems, and it's adventures).
Arrow can't believe her ears when she hears the news about a murder. Someone has harmed another member of the pack!
The gerbils are the culprits. As a dog, Arrow can feel superior to the little rodents that live with her. The murder is simply the result of one of the gerbils getting sick, but it still piques Arrow's curiosity about the other pets that live in the pack. She spends time with "Mum," the female leader; "Dad," the male leader; Big Red; and Giant, but she wasn't keeping her eye on the gerbils...
Through the eyes of Arrow and the other pets, Mum, Dad, and their two "pups"-Big Red and Giant-go through a number of life changes. Mum and Dad move their family across the country and take everyone on new adventures. Meanwhile, Big Red and Giant deal with school sports, bullies, and growing pains.
