Overview

His name was Jim Racine, and years ago he had been a top heavyweight contender in the United States. The public outrage forces an investigation, and the government refuses to return his passport. Racine is in limbo, but he figures if he can get to the U.S. Ambassador, his problems will be over. But when he crashes the Ambassador’s party, he runs into a group of young terrorists who kidnap Racine along with the Ambassador and a few of his friends. When the terrorists murder a couple of bystanders in cold blood, Racine knows the hostages are next. But he’s a survivor, and they’re going to have a hell of a time killing him—even if his only escape involves taking all the hostages with him.

The ambassador, Grogan, Alicia, and I were ordered to move forward, into the center of the cave.
“Put down the candles,” Raoul said. His voice was deepened and amplified by the cave.
I placed my candle on the stone floor; Alicia hesitated and then did the same.
“Sara, las lumínicas," Raoul said.
We waited. The girl materialized out of the shadows and circled behind us. She cut the rawhide thongs tying our hands, then picked up the candles and walked away. Our light was gone now, but its borders remained in our minds: we would remain in this place, at least for a time, like dogs who had been unclipped from their chains and yet are afraid to venture beyond the old safe perimeter.
“I’ll kill any of you who leave this chamber,” Raoul said.
And then the lights receded, dimmed, vanished.
We were immersed in total darkness. This was blackness beyond the concept of blackness; no grays, no pinpoints of starlight, nothing. It was not a darkness like mere night: this was thicker, heavier, and seemed to exert a pressure similar to the pressure you feel when diving in deep water. The floor, walls, and ceiling became a vise in our minds.
