Overview

The Long Road (The Last Dogs Series #3) by Christopher Holt, Allen Douglas

A science experiment gone horribly awry has granted Max, Rocky, and Gizmo the unique ability to read and understand human words. Armed with this know-how, they continue to journey south, on the lookout for beacons planted by a trusted friend's owner — beacons that promise to lead the trio to their people.

When the companions reach the ocean's edge, they find a free-spirited beachfront community. Reunited with long-lost friends (and introduced to a new delicacy — cat kibble), Max, Rocky, and Gizmo gain the motivation they need to keep going. But danger lies ahead. . . . As their travels take them deep into the spooky swampland, can they discover what's driven the humans away? Or have they finally reached the end of the long road?

The Last Dogs: The Long Road is the third book in a thrilling series about three unlikely friends on an epic quest to find their people — and bring them home.

Reviewed by Karen Pirnot for Readers' Favorite The Lost Dogs: The Long Road is the third in the lost dog series by Christopher Holt. It is intended for elementary-aged children and it will definitely hold the interest of both boys and girls. The reader learns that a science experiment has somehow gone wrong and has resulted in the three lead dogs' ability to understand human speech. At the same time, the experiment has led to the release of a virus which is potentially fatal to humans. As a result, all the humans have abandoned their pets and the pets are left to fend for themselves. Max, Rocky, and Gizmo are determined to find the scientist responsible for the mistake and then seek an antidote so that they can be reunited with the humans they love. Their adventure takes them across many threatening environments where they meet exciting new friends such as possums, alligators, cats, and other dogs. Their only clues are the beacons planted by the human belonging to a trusted friend. The three dogs are simply lovable, each with a personality that will captivate the interest of the child reader. Illustrator Allen Douglas has literally brought Max, Gizmo, and Rocky to life. His illustration are realistic and yet non-threatening to the young child. Even the predator alligators are outsmarted by the canines who can now think like humans! I loved reading The Last Dogs and even though I had not read the first two books in the series, Holt did such a wonderful job of inserting clues that every child will be able to pick up the story which preceded The Long Road book. This is the type of book that children will want in their personal libraries. It can be read again and again, with new meanings acquired at each reading.

The Last Dogs starts off with Max, Rocky, and Gizmo at a beach. When they are there they meet some old friends from the house full of cats. Also, they found out that a lady has come through here. This might be Madame Curie’s owner, who will help them find their people. Max, Rocky, and Gizmo move on from the beach and go into a swamp. When they are walking they thought they saw eyes, but it turned out to be a beacon. A beacon is a barrier that the lady uses to mark she has been through here. Max, Rocky, and Gizmo gain confidence now that they know they’re going the right way. When they are walking they here the trees move. Then, they see real eyes that belong to possums. The one possum, Hank, gives Max, Rocky, and Gizmo directions to a party the lady is having down the street. Max, Rocky, and, Gizmo follow Hank’s directions and they see orange barriers. Max and Rocky run up to the barriers, but Gizmo doesn’t. Gizmo noticed that they weren’t beacons, they were plain barriers. Max, Rocky, and Gizmo go back to where the road was, when they hear something in the trees. This time it’s not possums, it’s gators! I would recommend this book to people who love dogs and adventure. The series of books, with Max, Rocky, and Gizmo, is about these three dogs traveling long ways, and meeting good and bad people, to find their owners. Some of the adventures involve wolves, the ship with dogs, and the alligators.
