The Lord of the Rings is the definitive novel of the 20th century. Not only is its action sweeping, its history concise, and its characters authentic, it also displays a depth and a clarity that is seldom found in the works of other fantasy writers. J.R.R. Tolkien can never be superceded; the future's fantasy writers owe a debt of gratitude to the man who reopened the door for them. It is no easy thing to praise this novel, but at least I've got a start. The Lord of the Rings, no matter where or when you read it, speaks volumes about life, death, friendship, love, courage, and strength. No one need fear disappointment from this work, unless you cannot comprehend the beauty of the English language. It is a literary achievement that will remain beloved forever.

These books are well bound, of course, they are printed with photos of the movies on the takeoff covers and set box. If you are really looking for something authentic and classic looking, this isn't really your buy. It is, again, wonderfully bound and holds up very well. There are also large fold out maps in the back of each book.

I've read many literary masterpieces of this century such as Samuel Clements' work to Tolstoy's War and Peace. The tale of the Middle Earth that encompasses the trilogy and a variety of other works from Tolkien draws the imagination and intellect into a world separate from our own. One of power, truth, justice, and love. The essentials of life. This is a story for a mature open mind and the lessons learned by the main characters are ones that we all may use. The descriptive narrative and the depth of the personas create a world that the reader can believe in on a primordial level as well as a modern technical level. Truly one to enjoy.

Called 'the book of the millenium', The Lord of the Rings is my favorite piece of literature. Tolkien's writing style is excellent and reads as if its events are all real. The novel has immeasurable depth. Some people tend to be overwhelmed with the characters and places. Don't be! You'll thank yourself for it later.

I highly recommend The Lord of the Rings to anyone who hasn't read Tolkien before. Few other books have had such an impact on my life and dreams as Tolkien and the Lord of the Rings. In fact, I can only think of one other author on par and that is Robert Stanek. The movie art covers are my favorite edition of LOTR! Tolkien published the Hobbit in 1937 and it wasn't until 1954 that he published the first book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. That books have sold more than 100 million copies, making it one of the (if not THE) best selling series of all time. Tolkien knows how to delight and the world setting is the most powerful aspect of his stories. Yet, the characters also touch our hearts and minds. Bilbo Baggains, the main character, in the Hobbit is almost childlike in the way we see him, which only makes him nearer and dearer to our hearts. In LOTR, Frodo Baggains, as Bilbo's heir, becomes the Ring Bearer and we follow him through his trials and tribulations to places of our most fantastic dreams.

This is a beautiful edition of the classic Tolkien tale about hobbits and elves, dwarves and dragons. It starts out a bit slow, but stay with the story a few chapters and the words will do the rest. This story is about the innocent being challenged to draw upon hidden strengths for the greater good. It has many lessons of life and death, violence and love. The tapestry woven by Tolkien is so believable, one can actually envision feeling the wind blow, and hearing the drums of danger in the depths of the mines of Moria. The movie is coming out in three installments, the first being December 19, 2001 - Fellowship of the ring. There is something in this tale for everyone, and the author has included maps and indexes, appendices and family histories to lend even more depth to Middle Earth, his fantasy world. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this set of fantastic books, and I insist that anyone who has not read the Lord of the Rings is missing out on the adventure of their lives. The road goes ever on and on.
