Another reviewer has described Mark Andrew Ferguson's Lost Boys Symphony as a combination of The Time Traveler's Wife, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Memento. I think a better description would be a more confusing version of The Butterfly Effect. Ferguson has crafted an elegant solution to the conundrum of memory after time travel; Henry's 41- and 80-year-old versions retain their memories of previous lives at the same time they acquire new memories from newly-created timelines. Unfortunately, this approach actually makes the book harder to follow, as characters remember and talk about mutually incompatible events simultaneously. Add in sections focused on the lives of Henry's non-time-traveling friends Gabe and Val, and then introduce Gabe to the 41-year-old Henry while 19-year-old Henry is still around (albeit missing), and my brain starts to hurt. I received a free copy of Lost Boys Symphony through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
