This is a hip little sampler for the next chapter of David Byrne's Luaka Bop label. Budget-priced, it offers tracks from many of the artists who either have recently released or soon will be releasing new full-lengths on the imprint. That said, it works beautifully on its own as a record, with cuts by Parisian collective Nouvelle Vague, the legendary Brazilian songwriter and singer Tim Maia, 21st century Renaissance man Jim White, the newly revitalized Os Mutantes, and Kassin + 2 as well as his mates Moreno + 2 and Domenico + 2, who play spaced-out modern Brazilian sounds weaving soul, psychedelia, electronic dance music, and bossa into a breezy, summery whole. In large part, this is all about the sound of rhythm and the rhythm of sound, and with the exception of Nouvelle Vague and White, it's all south of the equator. Good stuff.
