Overview

Kathy Taylor had weathered eight rough years as a black female police officer in Boston - but enough was enough. She turned in her badge, moved up north, and set up shop as a private investigator in historic Salem, Massachusetts. Now she's surrounded by wiccans and herbalists, by crystal shops and psychic pizza-deliverymen.

And her first client has just stepped in the door.

The Lucky Cat is the very first entry in the Salem Massachusetts Mini Mystery series. These short stories will be written and loaded one a day from October 1 through October 31, 2014. All author's proceeds from this series benefit battered women's shelters.

Lisa has lived in scenic Massachusetts since 1986, with only two brief forays out of state. She loves the history of Salem. One of Lisa’s ancestors was Ann Foster, who died during the Salem Witch Trials. Ann Foster was a grandmother by that time and sacrificed herself to protect her daughter and granddaughter.

Shadows deepened over the evening twilight. Two cats crouched in the grass. One was tawny with white markings, the other, silver as the Starpelt. The tawny one sighed. "StarClan has been telling me things I cannot understand." He mewed sadly.
The silver cat wrapped her tail around her paws, waiting for the other cat to continue. Messages from StarClan were not to be taken lightly. "What Kestralflight?" The silver cat mewed. Kestralflight closed his eyes. "Sorrow before joy. Bad luck before luck. When thunder booms before lightning, golden paws streak through the thunder, bringing hope for the clans, when fire falls from the sky." He said quietly. "I do not know what it means Silverstar, but it sounds impossible."
"Nothing is impossible." Silverstar answered her head cocked, slightly teasing.. "You told me that." Kestralflight let out a small purr, reminded of old kithood memories. "I also told you life is not fair, when I got the biggest share of prey." Kestralflight lay down, sighing wistfully. "Those were the days before all this sorrow. This is a dark time for ThunderClan." Silverstar nodded.
Crickets began to fill the air as the grass rustled with the night wind. An owl swooped down on an unsuspecting mouse. Silverstar lay down, her pelt shining in the moonlight. "We must remain strong. The clan will survive. You'll see." She mewed. (Hope you guys liked it! Please review and thanks for reading!) Stars &star Above

The "good" rating is because the author is donating to domestic violence shelters - as a survivor, I appreciate that. HOWEVER, as a Wiccan, I do not appreciate the very inaccurate and potentially harmful repetition of the idea that animal shelters do not allow adoptions in October due to Wiccans using cats in ceremonies. That is absolutely false! The reason they don't do it is two-fold: one, adoption of black cats by sick individuals who fancy themselves satanists, who do dispicable things in fake "ceremonies": to animals; and, two, the adoption of black cats by equally sick individuals who believe that black cats are evil and in league with "the devil" and also do dispicable things to them as a twisted interpretation of Christianity. These people actually believe that black cats are "familiars", in the mythical sense of the word - they think black cats can turn into people by a Wiccan doing spellwork. That idea is completely ridiculous, and just as true as us flying through the air on broomsticks and stirring cauldrons full of eye of newt and toe of frog. People still believe it, though, particularly in the South (I used to live in Memphis and, for a metropolitan city, have never met so many superstitious people and religious bigots in my life). Wiccans do NOT use any animals in ceremonies, though many of us have curious cats who like to hang around and watch, as cats will do when their owners are doing something the cat deems interesting. Write fiction if you must, even make the cats magickal if you like (it IS fiction, after all), but don't pass along ignorarance. Having known a pagan whose storefront was burnt out by an arson attack, these false ideas do still stir people up into doing some very hateful things. Not interested in reading any more of these extremely short stories. There are better books out there, ones that may be a bit silly but are not offensive.
