The core of the work comprises a dated list of all known machine-applied postmarks used in Wales since 1905 with facsimiles where they are required to illustrate the differences between different marks. There is a detailed introduction describing the different types of cancelling machine that have been used in Wales and the process by which the concentration of mail handling in the past 20-30 years has resulted in a dramatic reduction in the distribution of these machines. An appendix provides details of the main concentration schemes and maps are provided to show the location of all sorting offices at which a cancelling machine has been used. The present work in a much expanded update of the previous edition of 1985. It is intended to appeal to those with an interest in the postal history of Wales, and in machine-applied postmarks and postal mechanisation/automation in general.
