The Malcolm X Jazz Suite

The Malcolm X Jazz Suite

by Terence Blanchard

CD

Overview

A bright trumpeter who apprenticed with Art Blakey, Blanchard has a flair for the dramatic. On his most kinetic record, he puts a jazz spin on his soundtrack for Spike Lee's biopic, and all the emotion of the fiery black leader is present. With a sound hallmarked by poise, Blanchard's quintet shows how the expert manipulation of tension and release will never be replaced. Silencing those who believed the neo-conservative movement was without a sense of exploration, Blanchard's band throws off plenty of sparks on "Theme for Elijah." Bruce Barth's piano is suspenseful, and drummer Troy Davis launches a campaign against complacency. Early in his career, the New Orleans native appeared to be shadowing his pal, Wynton Marsalis. But in one of the last jazz discs he made before switching over to scoring films full-time, Blanchard demonstrated just how graceful and potent an improvising combo can be.
