I read Eben Alexander's first book, "Proof of Heaven" and absolutely loved it. It was entertaining and confirmed what I already believed to be true, especially because it happened to someone with impeccable credentials and previous skepticism. Naturally, I had to follow up with "Map of Heaven" after reading Dr Alexander's first book, but I did not find it be as entertaining nor as well written as the first book. However, I especially appreciated the scientific facts and evidence as to how the brain works and how what he experienced can be valid. Apparently, Dr Alexander's life changed dramatically after his near death experience, and the evidence presented in this book is a must read for anyone who is curious about life after death.

Having spent two months in the hospital and rehab recovering from bacterial menengitas, a neighbor suggested I read the book after hearing my stories of flying F-18s, playing doubles with the neurosurgeon, helping to fly the plane to Hawaii for new medication, etc., etc. I totally related to the book as the writer was able to put me right in the Bulls eye of what I had experienced in those two months, like Jesus laying down on my bed with me telling me that everything is going to be alright. Been was able to weave his medical expertise with his humanity and religion in such a powerful manner. For instance, sharing his experiences with ICU Psychosis in such a kind and yet moving manner that I fely vindicated regarding my own experiences. Unless one has been in the same state as Dr. Alexander, it is my experience with family and friends that they are glad to listen patiently but were more anxious for me to move on; something I just could not do or unwilling to do. Even did a great job of putting my experiences into a context that made a whole lot more sense than the doctors scientific opinion which did not jell with my experiences. Thank you Dr. Alexander. Dr. Eben Alexander suffered a bacterial meningitis infection in 2009. This infection was so severe, by all medical standards, that expectation of survival was minute, if survival did occur, the level of cognitive functioning for the individual would be (according to The Rancho Level of Cognitive Functioning Scale) a two (total assistance needed). For seven days, Dr. Alexander’s brain was literally submerged in a substance other than cranial fluid, he was unresponsive, his EEG showed negligible functioning and a ventilator kept him breathing. When he awoke, he reported having visited “other worlds,” for him, this was proof of an afterlife. He details that adventure in his first book, Proof of Heaven. In the four years following his near death experience (NDE), he read , meditated y and sought diligently to learn about NDE’s. This book is the result of that research.  “I use ‘heaven’ . . . . I am speaking in terms of another kind of geography: one that is very real, but also very different from the earthly one we are familiar with, and in comparison to which the entire observable physical dimension is as a grain of sand on a beach” (p.XIX).  He uses the language of science, theology and spirituality in his effort to describe the indescribable and does a good job of igniting wonderful images of what he understands awaits everyone after death.    His lack of siting supporting research when he makes sweeping statements, however, diminishes his credibility as a dependable researcher. For example, during his discussion of the effect observation has on any experiment (“There is no way to separate the observer from the observed.”) he makes the bold statement “In fact, a robust enhancement of physics that fully embraces the reality of consciousness (soul or spirit) as the basis of all that is will be necessary to transcend the profound enigma at the heart of quantum physics” (p.XXIII) (emphasis his). Such a supposition is intriguing and I found myself wanting to know how he reached such a conclusion yet there are no footnotes indicating the path he took in reaching such an understanding. There is an eleven page bibliography, though. His claim that “consciousness” is the eternal, indestructible, indefinable part of all humans; the essence that is the “I” at our core is the thesis of this work. He does not limit this consciousness to one (or any) religion and speaks throughout the book of the gifts this awareness brings to living. He identifies these gifts as: knowledge, meaning, vision, strength, belonging, joy and hope. The chapters of this book speak individually to these respective areas. Each “gift” offers a glimpse into the other worlds/dimensions that surrounds us all of our existence. When one becomes aware of this truth, there are glimpses of the “reality ” all around us. Because we are conscious beings connected to The Consciousness, we are capable of experiencing “Heaven” in the present moment.  There are no easy (any?) answers to be found in this work. He speaks of paradox, quantum physics, and religious mysticism, interspersed with testimonials from others who have had NDE experiences to demonstrate his assertions. At the conclusion of reading this book, the reader is still left with The Question of the ages – “What’s next?” It remains up to each reader to answer that question for her/himself. Dr. Alexander does proffer an excellent point from which to begin a discussion toward each arriving at their own understanding of Heaven.

The fact that this book will probably be a bestseller tells you all you need to know about this country. Pathetic.
