The Master Undone

Another scotch and soda, Mr. Compton?”

On any other day I’d stop at one drink—but not today. I hand the flight attendant my empty glass. “Leave out the soda this time.”

“You got it,” the woman says, smiling brightly. “Scotch straight up, on its way.”

Her overly cheery tone hits a raw nerve, reminding me of just how fake much of the past two years of my life has been. But then, I let it become that way. I chose to ignore things I shouldn’t have, and someone I cared deeply for paid the price.

As if that isn’t enough, I’m rushing to see my mother through her unexpected cancer diagnosis and emergency surgery. There’s nothing fake about that. It’s as goddamn real as it gets.

Loosening my tie, I sink down into the deep first-class seat, attempting to get comfortable despite feeling shredded. I’m hoping a little more alcohol will give me some much-needed sleep between San Francisco and New York, and maybe slow down the demolition process going on in my mind.

Yeah. That would be good. Anything to stop my mind from running wild. I’m supposed to be able to control my thoughts. I’m a Master. A title that defines who I am and how I stay grounded. My thumb is always on the pulse of everything that happens around me—or so I thought. For the first time since college, I’m not sure if that’s true. I’m not sure it was ever true, and I don’t know where that leaves me. I don’t know who that makes me.

“Scotch straight up.”

Inhaling a heavy breath, I turn back to the attendant and accept the drink. “Thank you.” My gaze touches her badge and I add, “Ms. Phillips.”

“Call me Emily,” she encourages, and her tone is far warmer as she asks, “Is there anything else I can get you?” There’s no mistaking her flirty, lingering emphasis and I study her, taking in her attractive features in a completely removed fashion. She is pretty, a brunette, which I favor, and well-endowed in all the right places, but she is not what I need. And I do need. Sex is my drug, not booze, but it’s no escape right now. Not when I don’t have control. Never without control.

I down my scotch and hand my glass to Ms. Phillips.

She arches a delicate brow. “Another?”

“Not this time. I know my limits.” And I value my minimal control too damn much to give any more of it away to a bottle of scotch.

Ms. Phillips’s lips curve seductively. “I bet you do,” she purrs. “I’ll be around if you need me.” She walks away.

Turning back to the window, I assure myself that I do know my limits. What got me in trouble was forgetting my rules, getting too close to my sub when I knew she wanted more than I had to offer. Silently, I curse. I can’t bring myself to think of the woman I’ve lost as just that—just a sub—but I struggle with the emotions her name stirs inside me. And I have to stop struggling. I have to get control of myself.

Rebecca. There it is. Her name. And with it, her eternal absence that I can never mend. The news of what became of her is still too raw, only forty-eight hours old. I’m struggling to deal with how my mistake led her into the path of another jealous woman with a horrific outcome. This is twice in my life I’ve let someone get close to me, only to see that person hurt. I’ll never let that happen again.

Once my flight lands in New York, I’m anxious to get to the hospital. I quickly make my way to the baggage claim and locate my carousel. With some fast footwork I’m at the front of the crowd and I’ve just snatched my single piece of luggage, besides the one hung over my shoulder, when I hear, “Mr. Compton?”

I turn to find a pretty blonde standing before me, her long, silky hair draping the shoulders of her pale pink, primly cut suit jacket. I arch a brow at her. “And you would be?”

“You are the Mark Compton, correct?”

“I’m Mark Compton,” I confirm, wondering where this is headed.

“I thought so. I recognize you from your picture at Riptide.” Her perfect pale cheeks flush. “Oh. Sorry. I should introduce myself.” She offers me her hand. “Crystal Smith, the new head of sales for Riptide, and thrilled to be working at one of the most prestigious auction houses in the world.”

I don’t reach for her hand. But my need to avoid touching her isn’t control, it’s weakness—and I hate weakness. I close my hand over hers. “Nice to meet you, Ms. Smith.” My palm warms, and I don’t want to be warmed by this woman, or by any woman I haven’t chosen as a submissive.

Her lashes lower, and I know she’s hiding her reaction to the touch. Despite myself, I am intrigued. Even more so when, almost instantly, she smoothly recovers and her lashes lift, her eyes directly meeting mine. Any sign of whatever she’d felt is gone.

Impressed by her rapid recovery and quick control, I’m surprised by how reluctantly I release her hand. I’m rarely reluctant about anything. “Since when is it the duty of the sales manager to pick someone up at the airport?”

Her brows dip and she gives a delicate snort. “It’s not like you’re just anyone. You’re your mother’s son.”

I inwardly cringe at the sore spot she’s hit. I love my mother, but there’s a reason why I opened my gallery across the country. “She ordered you to pick me up.”

Her lips curve. “Your mother’s as feisty as ever from her hospital bed.”

“I’m not surprised,” I manage tightly. Just thinking of my mother in a hospital bed creates a dull throb in my gut. “She’s impossible to say no to, even for me.”

“I thought for sure her pride and joy would be the one person who could.”

Fighting a wave of something dark I’d rather not name, I struggle to maintain my normal steely composure. “My mother is the only person I can’t say no to.”

She gives me an odd, quizzical look. “The only person?”

“Yes, Ms. Smith. The only person.”

She frowns. “I’m sorry,” she says, and then waves me toward the door. “My car’s parked in a fifteen-minute spot. We’d better run before I get towed.” She turns and starts walking, expecting me to follow.

I stare after her. She’s sorry? What the hell does that even mean, and why do I have this intense need to race after her and ask, when I never run after anyone?

First let me say, you must read the books in order to fully understand this one. You can get the reading order from Lisa Renee Jone's website. Definitely be sure to read If I Were You & Being Me first! Now on to the review. I must admit, I have not been a fan of Mark in reading the Inside Out series. To me, he was always just the troublemaker between Chris & Sara and therefore, was not someone I thought I would ever like to read about. When I first got The Master Undone from NetGalley, I asked myself if I really wanted to read about Mark. My curiosity got the best of me and I read it. Once I started reading, I could not stop. Boy did Lisa Renee Jones change my opinion on a character in one small novella. I loved the way she showed who Mark really was inside and what a troubled person he was. It totally changed my opinion of him to see him in a different light. I loved getting inside his head and seeing what made him the way he is. It was especially delightful to see him meet a woman who "turned him inside out" and challenged "the Master" in ways he would have never expected. After reading this novella, I certainly hope that Lisa Renee Jones decides to write a full book of Mark's story. I would love to see more of Mark & Crystal. Their chemistry is awesome but the best part of their story is Mark's reaction to her. Bring on more of this storyline!

AHHHH! Sorry, I just had to get that out :) Master Undone was my favorite of the novellas from the Inside Out series. "Master" Mark Compton finds his match. After Mark receives the shocking news about Rebecca he must jet off the New York to deal with a family matter. Mark blames himself for what happened to Rebecca and has no interest in redemption or the pity and condolences Chris and Sara lay upon him. He refuses to believe he is not to blame and is numb as he travels to be by his mother's side. Then he meets Crystal, and let me just say she is one of my favorite heroines I have read in a very long time. Of course, being a "Master" Mark takes no orders from anyone... except Crystal. She has this equally dominant, yet sweet, personality that completely befuddles Mark. He has never reacted like this to a woman before and as much as he tries to fight the pull, he cannot. This novella stepped up the Inside Out series, and I cannot wait to get a hold of the rest of Mark's story!

The Master Undone By Lisa Renee Jones I loved this novella about Mark from the Inside out Trilogy. This is told from his POV and it shows a different side of him than his arrogance. I would recommend that you read this one to get a better picture of Mark. Lisa has outdone herself with the Inside Out Trilogy. I love all of her books. Great job Lisa

Great addition to the Inside Out Trilogy. Lisa Renee Jones has a suggested reading order including all the journals and I read them that way. As she says, it is not necessary to read the journals to read the books but I will say that they definitely enhance the story. This book brings the character of Mark to the forefront. He is dealing with his own demons when he has to go to his mother when she is sick. He meets Crystal and she knocks him for a loop the man that is always in control and is suddenly losing it. It is interesting to see a vulnerable side of Mark. I truly hope he gets a story all of his own to see what happened in his past and where he goes in the future now that he is on shaky ground.

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Pocket Star and Edelweiss.) This is a short story which comes after ‘Being Me’ in the ‘Inside Out’ Trilogy, and follows Mark as he journeys to New York to see his mother who is in hospital for surgery for her cancer. Whilst in New York Mark meets Crystal, a woman who works for his mother, and seems to be one of the few people that dares to boss him about. This was an interesting short from the series, and it was good to get a bit more of an insight into Mark and his ideas and beliefs. I really liked how Crystal managed to get under his skin so well, and managed to make him feel things that he had never felt before. I loved Crystal for her calm confidence and no-nonsense approach to Mark, and I loved how off-kilter it made Mark! I wonder if we will see more of Crystal and Mark in the last book in the trilogy? Overall; a fun and sexy short where Mark isn’t in control! 6.5 out of 10.

Find this review and more at Lusty Penguin Reviews! “The Master Undone” is another companion novella for the Inside Out Trilogy. For the first time, Lisa Renee Jones does not write from Sara or Rebecca’s point of view but instead from Mark Compton’s. Mark’s novella picks up where Being Me left off. Mark prides himself on his control of all things, which makes his character quite arrogant and difficult to like. So the combination of potential bad news regarding Rebecca coupled with his mother’s surgery puts Mark in a new situation—out of control emotionally. Mark travels to New York City to support his mom through her surgery. While at the hospital, Mark meets Crystal Smith, the head of sales for his mom’s company. Mark is taken aback by Crystal because she epitomizes everything he isn’t normally attracted to with her blonde hair and very direct nature. The sexual tension simmers between them and sparks to life during one hot night of passion. Mark’s unstable emotional state makes him seem a bit more realistic and a little bit more likable. As I have stated before, the companion novellas do a nice job of adding to the series, and “The Master Undone” is no exception.

Could it be that Mark Compton's walls are coming down? Is he really feeling what he hasn't felt in a really long time? Or is it all just because of all the turmoil in his life right now? This novella shows a new side to the tough, always in control Mark we're used to. I really enjoyed this glimpse into Marks thoughts and really want to see where his story goes. Has Rebecca opened him up enough for him to love someone again? Minor spoilers! "Oh please. You have so many rules, your rules have rules." Mark arrives in New York to see his sick mother, blaming himself for Rebecca's death. On the airport he meets Crystal Smith who is the opposite of what he usually finds attractive in a woman. Yet Mark finds himself wanting to be around her all the time and she sees things he normally doesn't let anyone see. "I let her touch me. I never let anyone touch me."

While I thought this book was going to be about Marks time with Rebecca, I wasn't disappointed in the direction Lisa Renee Jones took the story. After Being Me I was worried about Mark. He was showing a side that he would consider weak, but we see as human. He does have feelings and we get to see him realize those feelings.  *****IF you haven't read Being Me, DO NOT READ BELOW- There are major spoilers for BEING ME******** After finding out Rebecca was murdered by Ava he now has to deal with his mother having cancer. He flies to New York to be by her side through the surgery. What he didn't plan on was having an attraction to the manager of the Rip Tide New York office. I loved Crystal. She didn't let Mark ruffle her feathers and she even stole the control in a situation or two. I hope we get more of Mark and Crystal in Revealing Us! I received this book from the publisher via NetGalley and Edelweiss in exchange for my honest review.

I have to say Lisa Renee Jones has become one of my top 5 authors. I will blindly buy anything she ever releases because nothing I have read by her has ever left me anything but satisfied, maybe a little anxious at the end for more, but always completely and thoroughly entertained. In Master Undone Mark is reeling from news of Rebeccas fate and from some terrible news medical issues that someone her loves is suffering from. As we have seen From If I were You and Being Me Mark is totally a type A Control FREAK! (And a lil freaky deaky in the bedroom too haha) Anyways when his plane arrives in New York he is picked up by Riptide employee Crystal who has Mark doing and saying things that are out of character for him, he knows they are like oil and water since they are both Control freaks but he is undeniable drawn to her. Mark isn't one to deny himself of what he wants but Crystal is not only a lot like himself but she is also his employee, and things with his last employee hadn't exactly ended well. He has sworn to never let himself close to anyone else, because when he does they always end up getting hurt but will he be able to deny himself Crystal? Or will she push him over the edge? Do not DENY YOURSELF the magic that is The Inside Out Series!!

First of all, please note this novella contains spoilers for Being Me. I will do my best to not give spoilers for either one. At the end of Being Me, we do find out what happened to Rebecca and who her "master" was. And in this well placed and written novella we get to see him from a different perspective than we have before. By this point we might think we have ideas into who he is and what type of character he is, but in this story we have to question what we think we know. It was awesome getting this perspective into his character and Im looking forward to finding out more about him and how and why he became the "master" as we know him.

Loved this book!! Only gave it 4 stars because it was just a wee bit short. It was nice to see things from Mark's perspective. It's also very interesting to see how strongly he reacts to Crystal; to finally see the Master Undone by a woman. I just wish we could have seen more interaction between them. Just how far will he let himself go with her? Can't wait for Revealing Us!!!!

4.5 Stars ~Reviewed by ANGELA & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog Ms. Jones fans’ have been asking and waiting for this novella to come out. Though it was too damn short for my liking, Ms. Jones managed to again, capture my attention and again, managed to leave me with my jaw dropped to the floor with a teaser ending. We knew, Mark Compton was going to get his own novella, and was it everything I expected? Yes! Mark is as hot as we have seen him from the previous books. However, this book differs as we get his darkest thoughts via his POV. He recently had a loss and he feels guilty about it. Along with that guilt, he just found out that his mom has cancer, poor guy. We really get know him as all his feelings are laid out for us to see. But this book is not about his loss but it’s about Mark finally finding someone who will meet his needs, someone to challenge him if you will. I find it funny that Ms. Jones pairs him up with someone so much like him. They both have very strong persona, aggressive and very controlling. Unfortunately, their story does not end here. There was a bit of a cliff hanger at the end. I found myself swiping the screen of my ereader(several times) making sure that ending was not a mistake. Alas, it was not. But the good thing is Revealing Us will be out in just a few weeks. Not only that we get more of Mark, but we will definitely get more of Chris and Sara. *ARC provided by publisher

The Master is a man, a flesh and blood man with a heart that has been awakened by the one woman who can make him whole. One night isn't enough. So looking forward to the continuation of Mark and Crystal's story.

WOW this is a quick read but WOW! Left me wanting so much more for Mark Mark has just had to start dealing with the fact that Rebecca his long time sub is no longer his. As this unfold he know learns his mother who is the power house behind Riptide is fighting her own battle. Mark thinks that going to his mother's side with help his forget his problems back in San Francisco. Only he has just meet his match in a woman his mother has hired since his last visit to NYC. He soon knows that this woman Crystal is definitely going to make "him" jump through some hoops. And that has Mark scared beyond comprehension.  Thought this read is short it is filled with SO much. Yet just another amazing part of the Inside Out Trilogy. Next Revealing Us due out September 10, 2013 (only wish it were sooner).

'I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review' In Rebecca's journal entries we learned what a jerk her master could really be and how bad the things he did and made her do hurt her. In The Master Undone The Master meets his match. Crystal does not bow to his wishes but he wants her anyways. She never seems to do what he expects. This book is a great look into the start of Mark and Crystal. I loved it. It is a short story that doesn't necessarily need to be read with the rest of the series however you do understand it better if you do read it in order. I definitely recommend reading!
