With all the skill and finesse of a 14 year old with a hard on, Randall Brooks offers a collection of short stories that stumble and stutter across the page. Supposedly of the “erotic thriller” ilk, they might have the potential to develop a cult following among acne-ravaged cosplay rejects lying in their parents' darkened basement, fantasizing about boning the girl — or boy — of their dreams while stuffing yet another sticky sock behind the furnace, but they certainly won’t be taken seriously by adult fans of either erotica or thrillers. PublishAmerica, Brooks’ print-on-demand publisher makes this disclaimer: “PublishAmerica has allowed this work to remain exactly as the author intended, verbatim, without editorial input.” Duh. To his credit, Brooks gave me a couple laughs of the laughing at kind, and more than a few face-palming moments -- which is not altogether bad. His drag queens are pretty funny, but most of his characters, especially those representing law enforcement and medicine, lack authenticity and credibility. Obviously, his drive to write is earnest. One only hopes he now makes a studious attempt to learn the craft.
