About the Author

In addition to being a YA author, Lisa Nowak is a retired amateur stock car racer, an accomplished cat whisperer, and a professional smartass. She writes coming-of-age books about kids in hard luck situations who learn to appreciate their own value after finding mentors who love them for who they are. She enjoys dark chocolate and stout beer and constantly works toward employing wei wu wei in her life, all the while realizing that the struggle itself is an oxymoron.

Lisa has no spare time, but if she did she’d use it to tend to her expansive perennial garden, watch medical dramas, take long walks after dark, and teach her cats to play poker. For those of you who might be wondering, she is not, and has never been, a diaper-wearing astronaut. She lives in Milwaukie, Oregon, with her husband, four feline companions, and two giant sequoias.

Seamlessly written, with a fabulous concept and characters I fell in love with, this series teaches as well as entertains. Not only did I learn about a *real* larger-than-life, truly remarkable figure in Oregon history, but I also really had to think hard about how we are destroying the environment and what devastating changes could very well be in our near future. Even more, I gained insights about human nature, about courage in the face of catastrophic adversity, and about how we are ALL more than we think we can be. I could not put down these books until I had read every single one - and when I'd finished I felt a hole in my heart, a real, true loss. I need MORE! Please, please, hurry up and publish the next book.

An intriguing plot set in the not-too-distant future.  MI 1, The McCall Initiative shows us what the year 2063 might hold for the world. Global warming has instigated sweeping changes in governments and society due to widespread drought.  In Cascadia, the new nation formed in the Northwest, there are personal plots and political jockeying.  Piper Hall, the 16-year-old protagonist, comes home after an  unscheduled party thrown by best friend Bailey, to discover an empty house.  Her mother, little brother, and grandfather are missing. As Piper learns, other families have also gone missing, though according to officials and neighbors, they have merely moved away. Fortunately Bailey is able to provide a hideout so that Piper will escape the same fate as her family. With Bailey's help and aid from an unlikely source, Piper continues her clandestine search for her family and what is happening in Cascadia.  Lisa Nowak, author of Dead Heat and the Full throttle series, constructs a believable world and amps up the tension in each of the separate books that will complete the series. This book held my complete attention until the very last page was turned.

Beautifully written. I love the fact that the author tried to keep the statistics regarding Oregon as accurate as possible. Great job Lisa Nowak! Now on to book 4.
