Piper Hathaway discovers that her husband Joel is thinking about leaving her and their two children. She loves her husband and doesn't want to lose him. What to do? Desperate to reconnect with Joel, Piper arranges a Christmas vacation at the Last Chance Motel where miracles happen. Piper prays for one, but everything falls apart.

The children get into trouble with the law, and Joel is rude and distant. Piper is ready to throw in the towel, but something holds her back. Perhaps it is the ethereal singing Piper hears in the lagoon each day at dawn.

Eva Hanover, the motel's owner, says the magical singing comes from a siren of the sea. Legend has it whoever catches a mermaid singing will have something wonderful happen in their life. Piper doesn't believe mermaids exist. Still, she is drawn to the water's edge each morning in hopes the old sea tales are true because Piper needs a miracle in a hurry!

The father is a major jerk, the children, especially Trevor is out of control and love is on the rocks, so…let’s go on vacation and see how many other lives we can ruin. I love when Hattie, his mother, shows up. She is quite the character and a tad manipulative. Can the Last Chance Motel work its magic? Is that a mermaid I hear singing? I loved this refreshing romance and definitely want to visit The Last Chance Motel again.

Reviewed by Janelle Alex, Ph.D. for Readers' Favorite A breath of fresh air is the description that befits The Mermaid's Carol: A Last Chance for Love in more ways than one. Abigail Keam has written a fantastic tale of love, adultery, family struggles, and the legend of a magical mermaid - yes, a mermaid. Piper Hathaway discovers that her husband, Joel, is having an affair, so she tries a last ditch effort to save her marriage by planning a Christmas holiday for her family in the Florida Keys. Their pre-teen children are out of control, and Joel has a nasty habit of projecting his anger and frustration at Piper while avoiding being a father. Piper has to learn to take a stand for herself and her children, but how she goes about it is quite surprising to everyone involved. Keam has written a wholesome feel-good story; therefore, readers can expect a happy ending - whatever that ends up meaning for Piper and Joel Hathaway and their children. Abigail Keam is an exceptional writer and brings her readers right into the story setting through her vivid descriptions of the lush scenery as well as the emotional turmoil. Escaping the stereotypical romance novel scenario, The Mermaid's Carol is a mix of frustration, betrayal, secrets, angry children, and strong women. Piper was initially portrayed as being a weak individual, but through the magic of the mermaid's song and Keam's creativity she becomes empowered once again. That makes The Mermaid's Carol and Piper Hathaway an inspiration for other women who may be facing similar scenarios in their lives. Without a doubt, The Mermaid's Carol carries a strong and impactful message throughout the story. Take a stand for who you truly are, and if you want a little bit of encouragement and a happy ending, read Abigail Keam's The Mermaid's Carol. You're in for a magical treat about real life if you do.
