The Ministry Years: 1977-1979

Keith Green emerged from the Jesus Movement of the mid-'70s to become one of Christian music's most influential and beloved performers. An extraordinarily prolific artist before he died in a plane crash in 1982, Green and his collaborator/wife Melody wrote and recorded what remain some of the most enduring Christian pop songs ever released. Thirty-eight of them can be found on this two-disc set. Music truly was Green's ministry, and he shunned all trappings of fame -- even refusing to sign autographs -- instead using his music to evangelize to "all who have ears." Like the protest era out of which he rose, Green's songs were meant to inspire action. Even a seemingly blithe number such as "Because of You" is at heart a call to recognize God's transforming grace. The spitfire "No One Believes in Me Anymore" and poignant "How Can They Live Without Jesus" show the Greens' knack for turning compassion toward unbelievers into an inspirational call to arms. Some of Green's more theatrical numbers, such as "You Put This Love in My Heart," may call to mind such contemporaneous bell-bottomed efforts as "Godspell," but on the whole, it's remarkable how well Green's music has stood the test of time. Perhaps that's because his message remains ageless. Lisa Zhito

I grew up listening to Keith Green on vinyl records. When I got older, the vinyl warped and I was at a loss on what to do. My parents had bought me one of Keith Green's CDs and I played it until there was only three songs left that didn't skip. This year I was blessed to find that ALL of Keith's songs were included in this single package for only twenty dollars. I snatched it up as soon as I could and now I listen to it almost every time I'm in my car, at home, or with my family.

Keith not only sang but worshipped when he sang. My family and I were 'blown away' at the Jesus festival (in MD.) were we heard him sing "To Obey is Better than Sacrifice." The Holy Spirit and these words of Keith's changed our lives that day. 30,000 persons were standing and we all fell to our knees in humbleness and dedication to God. Then the news of his plane crash which crushed us all. He and his crew. We will be forever grateful for Keith's music and message. God truly used him for His service.

Keith Green's musical legacy lives on with this collection of his finest songs. He was one of the, if not the first Contemporary Christian artists to tap into power of rock and folk music to get the message of Jesus out to the 70's generation and beyond. His music was the first Christian music I heard and it changed my life. You can't listen to his music and not be moved by the simple beauty of the music and words. He truly sings from the heart, and straight into yours. In particular, the song
