CHAPTER 1

What a clever little dog, young Skipper was.
Always aware of what his master does.
He had eyes that were big and lashes so long
A little black nose and a bark that was strong.
Although he was small for a St. Bernard,
e loved to frolic outside his own yard.
His owner would leave him in the backyard at eight,
Where he pretended to play near the driveway gate,

Fretfully listening for his owner's car to start,
He waited cheerfully for her to depart.
When Skipper was sure that his master was gone,
He would scamper off to the backyard lawn.
St. Bernards are known for their incredible strength,
And this is one of the traits he tested at length.
Behind his doghouse and next to the fence
Lay a sturdy box that was somewhat immense.

Skipper jumped up on it in such a flash
He flipped over the fence and into the trash.
After shaking the dust and debris from his handsome fur,
He prepared himself for his daily venture.
When he got to the street, he remembered the phrase
"Check for oncoming cars by looking both ways,"
He waited so patiently for the traffic to disappear,
And he strutted across the street when it was clear.

Skipper was eager to visit his friends for awhile
So, to the park he bounded with a great big smile.
At the entrance he noticed they were already there.
Several moms sat on blankets or in their lawn chair,
Some were talking or reading while others crocheted.
They kept an eye on their children as they watched them play.
When the children saw Skipper they would call him by name,
They all wanted him to take part in their game

Skipper would chase all the sticks and balls that were thrown
This was so much more fun than being home all alone.
It wasn't too long before the mothers would shout
"Time to take a break, the snacks are spread out!"
For Skipper this had become a very familiar sound,
He darted over to snag his choice spot on the ground.
Despite the fact that he was hungry now,
He waited patiently to be fed some chow.
