In 2011, Pat added another statistiche became one of the millions with cancer and his would be a rare and incurable blood cancer called multiple myeloma. Calling on his faith and fighting spirit, Pat's mantra became, "the mission is remission", and after stem cell treatment and rounds of chemotherapy, the myeloma could no longer be detected.

Pat and his wife, Ruth, are the parents of 19 children, including 14 adopted from four nations. In 2012, Pat received the John W. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Pat teaches an adult Sunday school class at First Baptist Church of Orlando and hosts three weekly radio shows.
