The Monster Party: A Spooky Story

School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-Twitchy Witch wants to go to a Monster Party where no witches are allowed, so she conjures up Wonderpants the Wizard to transform her into a gruesome troll. Add some final touches at the Ugly Parlor and she's ready to party. However, like all magic spells, there is a caveat. Wonderpants warns: "...hide your reflection, near and far,/For a mirror will show who you really are." The party is fantastic until a goblin spots the real Twitchy in a mirror, and only her own magic spell saves her from becoming lizard pie. Briticisms (e.g, "toad in the hole," "beetles and mash") add to the story's humor. The colorful illustrations, featuring six strategically placed holograms and cutouts, are full of lively asides and fearsome, but not scary, creatures. An enjoyable addition.-Virginia Opocensky, formerly at Lincoln City Libraries, NE
