Feared in the wild and disdained on many a child's plate, the lowly mushroom gets its day in the sun in this latest addition to the Read and Wonder series. Adhering to the series' concept, Frazer and Dale use a simple but friendly story line and abundant illustrations to present a hearty serving of fungi facts. A boy narrates as his family hunts mushrooms in the woods. Through the family's discoveries (and sidebars of thoughtfully gathered facts), readers will learn general information about mushrooms as well as specifics about a dozen or so types. Dale's watercolor-and-pencil drawings are shadowy and serene, perfect for the dank habitat and vague surrealism of fungi, but, as the book wisely notes, they cannot serve as a reliable guide to identification (though the toxicity of many varieties is made clear). Nevertheless, as a general introduction to mushrooms, "The Mushroom Hunt" has a soft-sell approach that is hard to resist.
