Not much actually! Very few men with the calibre and depth of range and control can sing Lord Lloyd Webber's music the way this performer can. You can find different, but you will never find better!
Michael Crawford performs Andrew Lloyd Webber, the performer's second album following his runs in London, New York, and Los Angeles as the title character in the Lloyd Webber musical, the Phantom of the Opera. Mr. Crawford salutes his breakout songsmith with 13 songs from various ALW musicals and proves once again his innumerable talent as not just a vocalist, but as a consummate actor. I am familiar with the original show recordings from which these songs originated from and feel personally that Mr. Crawford could have easily played each character on the stage; he does not merely sing the songs, but gets into the character with an outpouring of emotion and a clear sense of musicality (as always) which makes this album among the best in his repertoire. On this CD Crawford does quite plainly his best performance of The Music of the Night, as well as a solid rendition of Memory from Cats, among others. The duet on Other Pleasures/The First Man You Remember with his youngest daughter Lucy is also not to be missed. For Phantom fans, 4 songs are present here, each beautifully performed and equal to the original London Cast Recording. His smooth and flowing voice make all the tracks listenable and rival the original performers of the songs to no end. Even some of the lesser Webber showtunes are made unmissable by Crawford's fresh and emotive personality. All in all, I put this recording in a high spot in my collection and strongly recommend it.
