Overview

The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads [Expanded]

This concert set, initially released in 1982, somehow slipped between the cracks, escaping CD release for more than two decades -- a situation that's remedied in fine fashion by this reissue, which nearly doubles the original's content with the addition of 16 new tracks. The supplements include live material that dates back as far as the Heads' days as up-and-comers on the CBGB scene, such as a skeletal early rendition of "The Girls Want to Be with the Girls" and an embryonic version of "Drugs" (which appears under the title "Electricity"). Some of the newly appended material merely rehashes what was there in the first place -- such as a superfluous second version of "Psycho Killer" -- but most of the bonuses, 13 of which have never been released in any form, are meaty nuggets indeed. A sparse reading of "The Book I Read," for instance, capitalizes on David Byrne's quirky vocal intensity, while an agitated "Born Under Punches" slips and slides down the complex eddies the band eventually became adept at traversing. Although a reunion looks as unlikely now as when the band first split all those years ago, The Name of This Band goes a long way toward satisfying those live Heads cravings.

I was not a Talking heads fan in their heyday. I thought about picking up the vinyl version of this album but never did. Finally it came out on CD and I bought it. Several listens over the years have convinced me that David Byrne & Co. were not just clever new wave artists, but a great live band. Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth were a tight rhythm section but the surprise on Disc 1 was the guitar interplay between Jerry Harrison and Byrne. Disc 2 is the Heads as a "big band" and the sound is fuller. Adrian Belew, future guitarist for King Crimson, adds some weird sounds to the songs. Byrne's vocals on both discs sound like he is always on the edge of a breakdown but he seems more confident on Disc 2. A listen to this long lost recording may cause you to reappraise the Talking Heads
