Overview

The biblical story of the Nativity is one about faith, love--and a miracle. With illustrations that are enchanting and unexpected, Julie Vivas reveals the human side to Mary's story, beautifully imagining the Angel Gabriel delivering the news to her, the exhausting journey with Joseph to Bethlehem, and at last the deliverance of the baby Jesus.

So, first off, this is a religious Christmas book, as suggested by the title. It is not schmaltzy or simplified, and never once mentions sin. Santa is nowhere in the thing. It is Julie Vivas' fabulous watercolor (?) illustrations of the story right out of the Bible. The pictures make the awe and wonder accessible for young ones and fresh for those reading it with them. People's expressions are extraordinary, and tell volumes of storyline. Angels' wings are both luminous and tattered. They are joyful. They wear workboots. They play with sheep. The result is an undiluted story that doesn't condescend, and isn't heavy handed. It's exactly what I need at this time of year. (For those who want more from this illustrator, the I Went Walking board book was a favorite in our house, and is totally non-religious.) I give this and/or Nancy Tafuri's The Donkey's Song to new grandparents whom I know to be Christian. I hope it never goes out of print.

This was recommended to me from a fellow CASA (Child Advocate) who said she read it to her grandchildren every Christmas. I bought copies for my three sisters and 3 girlfriends to read to their grandchildren. This is a great way to start a tradition and a perfect book to tell the story. Beautiful pictures as well.
