He was chosen as the 2010 Utah English Teacher of the Year, and he was president of a state English and two state drama and speech teacher associations. Neil received his bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University and his master's degree from the University of Wisconsin at Superior. He did doctoral work at the University of Utah and the University of Northern Colorado. He wrote The Drama Source Book and compiled three books of plays. Neil is very active in his church, and he loves to see the enactment of the nativity pageant at Christmastime. He knows many of the struggles to make the pageant meaningful, and he has tried to address them in this dramatization.

I really like this new presentation of the Nativity. For parents, grandparents, church workers, event organizers, for anyone wishing to physically represent the Christmas season drama of the Nativity, this script could be very helpful. With it’s clear organization of the familiar texts, it eliminates the usual flipping back and forth in the pages of the New Testament. And the possibility of a divided narration provides even more opportunities for interest and participation. The script’s directions for costumes, props and staging eliminates much of the confusion that in some cases detracts from what parents or organizers hope will be a spiritual experience. The simplicity and flexibility in this presentation makes preparation easier, and at the same time increases the range of ages and abilities of those participating. This script could easily be performed in almost any open space, from a family living room to a cultural hall stage.
I love how simple yet thorough this slim 26-page booklet is for directing a Nativity pageant. It includes the cast, two narrators, stage direction, props, and optional songs. The cues for the actors include directions for movement and expression that will bring life and meaning to this powerful story, and are also easy enough for young children to follow. It's perfect for a family, church class, or Christmas party. We can't wait to use it this Christmas season with our daughters and their cousins! (I received a complimentary copy of the book; all opinions in this review are my own)
This version of the story is great because it is simple enough to use with little children but still brings up the powerful aspects of Joseph, King Herod, and the many struggles that make this birth a miracle. I also love that it has Christmas hymns, when to sing them, and the lyrics in the back. You could make this as simple or complex of a show as you want.
The Nativity is one of my favorite things about Christmas, from the displays to the story and I love pondering it during the season, especially on Christmas Eve. My kids used to act things out as we read it when they were younger, but this is a great way for each character to know their part to get the full effect, especially since the Bible wording can be difficult for a younger audience to interpret. Using this book can help each person know their role in the story, giving each actor parts to speak, as well as having narrators fill in the cracks. This little booklet tells the actors where to stand, when to sing carols that are fitting for what's happening in the story, and which props to use. This is a keeper to use for each and every family Christmas Eve. *I received a copy from the publisher, which had no influence on my thoughts and opinions.*
I absolutely love plays, and any type of production, big or small. So, I was super excited when Neil Johnson contacted me about reviewing his new Nativity Pageant. It is perfect! I love everything about it! He is very smart to add general instructions about cast size, narration, length of the show, etc. The show is only 15 minutes (up to 20 minutes if you add hymns). I love how each scene is broken down by who is in it, and that there is a chart with stage areas so people can learn and follow stage directions. The props are very simple, and no set is needed. Each scene specifies the scripture reference and the length of the scene. The script is based on the nativity story, and is directly from the King James version of the Bible, with a couple variations for understanding. I love how there are basic stage directions to help bring the mood to each scene. Everything is very easy to do, but will bring the Spirit to those watching. Neil Johnson clearly put tons of thought into how to create a pageant that would be meaningful and spiritual, yet also very simple so that people of all backgrounds and talent could participate. This would be wonderful for church Christmas parties, family nights, and so much more. The cast can go from 6-25, so there are so many options!
