Overview

'The Naughty King Series' is a set of five books, combined under the one cover, that retell the Biblical story of the plagues of Egypt, sent by God, to effect the release of the Hebrew people from slavery. The books of the series are: book 1 'Frog City'; book 2 'Mossie Squadron'; book 3 'Fly Fleet'; book 4 'Locust Lift Off; and book 5 'City of Tears'. The books are written from the perspective of the creatures sent by God to plague pharaoh, the enslaving, disobedient King. Each book contains interactive activities, humour and suggestions for parents or teachers using the material. This series is designed for the younger reader but can provide enjoyment and value to the older child as well.

In Book 1, 'Frog City', Wilfred Froggle is introduced as the observant bystander who reappears in both books 2 and 5. Wilfred's purpose is threefold: firstly, to keep the focus on God's desire for obedience; secondly, to keep the reader engaged; and thirdly, to maintain focus on the real reason for the plagues - Pharaoh's continued disobedience.

The purpose of the series is to draw attention to, and promote discussion around the vital concept of obedience to God.

"Let My People Go" Suzanne Jones has written a delightful series of Children's Stories, called "The Naughty King" series; based on Exodus 8 - 14. The book teaches obedience and the consequence's for disobedience.   It is also a 'Love Story' of a Father for His children. I can see children having 'a ball' (fun) with an adult reading this story to them, including the participation of the activities with an adult. The colour of the front and back covers; is an attention grabber - the colour of Kings! The pictures are all bright colours; that will delight a child's heart and enhance their enjoyment of the stories, especially with a charming  voice, full of expression, while reading the story to the children. I would love to see this book made into two separate books, one a child could hold in their hands and a separate Activities book to accompany it; a perfect pair. As a teacher’s guide I would prefer to see an Activities section at the back of the book - after the stories.  I feel this would enhance this book to another level. I personally do not like the drawings; I do not feel they equal the 'quality' of the story. I think this book has the making of 4 stars, but in its current form 3 1/2 stars.    In a skilled teachers hands, with a few changes; I can see  a rapturous 5 star rating from the children.      To me; it is the delight of seeing a child's eyes light up in wrapped attention and excitement!     This book has that potential. The Naughty King Series based on Exodus 8-14, by Suzanne Jones, is a children’s book based on the plagues of Egypt and obedience to God. With 30 years of teaching experience behind her, Suzanne is knowledgeable to what children enjoy reading and this is shown in a book that will appeal not only to an age-group of about 3 to 10, but also to their parents. Children will be drawn to this interactive book firstly by the large colourful cover, then will be captivated by the storyline, colourful illustrations and activities.   Suzanne holds a Graduate Diploma of theology as well as other qualifications and portrays the story of Pharaoh and the plagues in a unique but clever approach, which is enjoyable, amusing and non-threatening. This book has certainly covered most ways in reaching children even including a musical script. As a parent and having studied developmental psychology towards completing my Master’s Degree, I can well recommend this book and would rate it at five stars. Brian Wilson
