New Yorker Out Loud, 1999 (2 CDs) by New Yorker Magazine

"Jim and the Dead Man," a previously unpublished episode from the original The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is read by Public Enemy's Chuck D. The passage was discovered in 1990 when the original handwritten manuscript of Huck Finn was found in an attic in Hollywood. "Brokeback Mountain" by Annie Proulx, is read by Suzy Amis and accompanied by original music composed and played by Donita Sparks of L7. "If you can't fix it you've got to stand it," writes Proulx, in this love story about missed opportunity. Jack Kerouac's "On the Road Journals" are read by Viggo Mortensen with musical accompaniment from DJ Bonebrake of X, seminal guitarist Buckethead, Viggo and Hank Mortensen. Kerouac, who named the Beat Generation and wrote its' most famous novel, kept journals from the age of fourteen until his death at the age of forty-seven.

In "How to Date A Brown Girl," Junot Diaz advises the reader how to act with a girl when your parents are out of the house. Jeffery Eugenides' "Baster" is about the possibility of motherhood in the working world of today. Steven Millhauser reads his "A Visit," a fantastic modernization of the fable of the frog prince.
