The Obituary Society by Jessica L. Randall

When Lila Moore inherits her grandfather's house, she finds herself in a small Midwestern town where margarine is never an acceptable substitution for butter, a coveted family recipe can serve as currency, and the friend who will take your darkest secrets to the grave will still never give you the secret to her prize-winning begonias.

Lila is charmed by the people of Auburn, from the blue-eyed lawyer with the southern drawl to the little old lady who unceasingly tries to set Lila up with her grandson. But when strange things begin to happen, Lila realizes some of her new friends are guarding a secret like its a precious family heirloom. It's a dangerous secret, and it has come back to haunt them. Lila is caught in the middle, and her life may depend on uncovering it. But even if she can, can she stay in Auburn when not everyone is what they seem, and even the house wants her gone?

Demon trucks, a house quickly turning into a money pit, and a young girl with a gift for finding things...throw in a group of wisecracking geriatric ladies who bake and break into a law office to solve a murder, and you've got the makings of a good book. I laughed, I cried, I was enthralled by this book!

Enjoyed this book, new writer for me. Murder, romance and intrigue. Kept me interested to the end, 210 pages. GJRA

About halfway through, I couldn’t stop reading till the end. I particularly liked how the main characters were drawn in depth, and the reminder of the feel of a small town.

Meh. Annoying characters, transparent and implausible plot, stereotypical old ladies hitting people with handbags, and ridiculous notion that people have the right to kill others without any legal consequences because "they deserve it". Glad this book was free, because I would have been angry had I paid for it. Deleting it off my Nook. PS - I didn't see anything in the book that could be described as "hilarious", or "charming". Must be something people are required to write if they receive a free book to review. Not honest.

This book has lots of twists and turns and it's very exciting and hard to guess. I hope you have as much fun reading it as I did. Kathy Weekly

Easy read, a little romance without explicit sex and the characters were lovely

The story started out slow and took several chapters to really pull me in. Once that happened, I read almost non-stop. I just find the ending so... disappointing. I didn't anticipate all of it, but I was not surprised and only finished the last 40 pages or so because I'd already made it that far. I like to finish a book and feel satisfied or sad it ended or lost in the story, thinking it over still. This book didn't do that for me; I'm rather irritated. From page 174 on, it was just a series of, "oh, for- really?" moments. But maybe I'm just too used to mysteries where you have access to more clues, so there are less revelations pulled out of thin air, and there isn't a paranormal bent. Plus, there were just so many decisions made at the end that made me want to smack the characters.

Storyline had potential but there were gaps. Writing is not very sophisticated. More details needed to enhance readers experience

Sorry to all of you who gave this book raving reviews, but I found it to be very boring. I was over 100 pages into reading it but couldn't finish it. I found no reason for the story to jump back and forth from one date to one in the past. It never added to what I had already read.
