The Ocean Between Us authored by Rhonday H. Bishop and illustrated by Cass Barth is the story of a precious and precocious little girl named Sophia who is left with the job of making her grandparents smile while her Mommy is away serving in the military. Bishop¿s portrayal of Sophia is both realistic and respectful, especially since she based her characters on the many military families that she met as a childcare professional at an air force base.

Sophia is a courageous child who takes comfort in the sand and ocean that remind her of her family¿s love for her. Sophia understands the importance of her mother¿s job as a doctor in Iraq, but she still has a child¿s point of view that warms the heart. Sophia¿s mother leaves her with a jar of gummi bears to eat once a day to give Sophia a way to mark the time; Sophia cleverly surmises that if she eats them more quickly her mother will be home sooner.

Bishop uses the theme of sand to craft a fulfilling story while Barth draws on the color of sand to serve as a background for all of her illustrations. Sophia¿s courage makes this story a pleasure for all readers but military families will find this book particularly helpful to read to their own brave children.
