The O¿Leary Enigma recounts the forces and events that shape adoptee Barbara O¿Leary¿s life from childhood until her first significant success as a naval officer. Barbara excels in the classroom and as an ice hockey player and go-kart racer. However, in spite of her accomplishments, Barbara has a loner personality that prevents her from establishing close relationships. She also discovers that her biological mother was murdered and that her biological father, a wealthy dissolute Arab, paid handsomely to keep his name off Barbara¿s birth certificate. While attempting to alter her beanpole body with a hormone treatment, through a series of misadventures, Barbara ends up in Chad. There she initiates an undercover mission to reestablish communications with a group of hostage-takers. Subsequently, she helps exploit a rift within the hostage takers that leads to a successful hostage rescue. The novel ends with terrorist half-brother, Ahmed, trying to avenge himself on Barbara.
