I am a high school sophomore, who decided to read this book for a research project on the Aboriginals. Though the book is well written and organized, I found it difficult to follow and to understand the text as I was reading. I would recommend this book to those who enjoy reading about the history and exploration of Australia. I would also recommend this book to those who enjoy learning about cultures and traditions, because Flood does a good job in elaborating the lifestyles of the Aboriginals. Flood’s writing goal was “to provide an up-to-date account that answers the most commonly asked questions about the First Australians" but unfortunately, in my opinion I do not think she answered some of the questions, that crossed my mind while reading (xi). Sometimes she would mention a topic, such as rock art, and then move on without explaining what exactly rock art is and the importance of it to Aboriginal culture. Although my overall view on the book is negative, it provided me with some interesting facts about the Aboriginal culture and their belief system. Though the book provides plenty of information and insight to Aboriginal life and history, it did not provide me with a clear understanding of the original Australians.
