This was a great love story between Enrico and Laurette, who were raised by Enrico's mother, Julie. Enrico is separated from his family when he joins the army. He is distraught when he learns his mother has disappeared and later when Laurette vanishes. Enrico is determined to find Julie and Laurette. Who were Laurette's parents? Who is Enrico's father? Where is Julie and was she taken by Banditi? Where is Laurette? The Marchese seems to have a Jekyll and Hyde type of personality. Though the Marchese made life difficult for Julie and Laurette at times in comparison to other damsels from great gothic stories like The Mysteries of Udolpho by Ann Radcliffe and Castle of Wolfenbach by Eliza Parsons, they had a relatively happy life.
