The Other Side of Daybreak

A companion to her acclaimed 2002 album, Daybreaker, this ten-song collection of remixes and rarities spans the breadth of Beth Orton's talent, from expressive folkie to electronica experimentalist. On the former count, her acoustic version of the Five Stairsteps' gospel-tinged soul hit "Ooh Child" flaunts the aching beauty in Orton's willowy voice, and the live acoustic rendition of her own "Concrete Sky" strips the original of Ryan Adams's cushioning harmonies and a tinkling piano arrangement to reveal the heartache at the song's core. But Orton's traditionalist tendencies have always coexisted with her desire to stretch her songs at the hands of able knob-twiddlers like the Chemical Brothers. Here, she collects remixes from post-rock sound collagist Four Tet, trip-hop boundary pusher Roots Manuva, and IDM linchpin Two Lone Swordsmen. Four Tet, a.k.a. Kieran Hebden, turns in an exceptional version of "Beautiful World" that nods to both the Velvet Underground and the psychedelic techno of the Chem Bros (i.e., "The Private Psychedelic Reel"), and Roots Manuva, a.k.a. Rodney Smith, makes an unlikely infusion of leathery hip-hop beats and sultry raps work to Orton's advantage. Throw in two album-worthy Daybreaker outtakes -- the spare "Ali's Waltz" and the swooning, strings-enhanced "Bobby Gentry" (sic), named for the unsung country singer and Glen Campbell duet partner -- plus a video for "Concrete Sky," and you have an essential hour's worth of music from a diverse and fascinating talent.
