Overview

“If she were asked to name what she was missing, she would be hard-pressed to say, yet she knew deep within her being that whatever it was, it was vital to her survival.”

Jessie Winters has it all: the perfect house; a loving husband; an adorable little girl; a career; and all of the outer trappings that signify a rich and blessed life. But underneath it all, she’s missing something, a thing that she can’t quite put her finger on, but a thing that gnaws at her picture-perfect existence and exposes the deep cracks beneath her surface.

As Jessie grows increasingly dissatisfied with her marriage and her life, she has a chance encounter with Marcus Demmings, a handsome and mysterious attorney, who instantly captivates her and causes her to risk it all when they begin a steamy and intense extramarital affair. And despite her inner turmoil, Jessie finds herself questioning the life she’s been living—and whether she should leave it all behind.

But Jessie’s affair with Marcus takes her on an emotional journey that forces her to confront the trauma and unresolved issues of her past before she can fully contemplate her future, and she must find the courage to move beyond her artificial life and into a world where she lives on her own terms.

What remains to be seen, however, is who will join her on the other side.

Readers will find themselves captivated and transformed by the novel The Other Side of Through by Michelle Donice. This novel's beautiful, clean prose makes readers experience the main character Jessie Winters's spiritual and personal dilemmas and reflect on their own life paths-including the intended and unintended courses they may take. Readers witness how Jessie confronts the unanswered questions in her life and how she slowly realizes the power of self love and forgiveness. A central theme to this novel is that self love is the key to true spiritual enlightenment, and although many novels may attempt to highlight this theme, this novel succeeds where others fall flat-mainly because it portrays the process of attaining self love as messy, uncomfortable, difficult and laborious. It is not as easy as declaring "I love myself" and therefore life is wonderful as promoted in other books. The process of discovering self love and fulfillment is definitely not easy, but it sure is worth it as Jessie demonstrates. Jessie starts from a place of doubtfulness yet strives to become a better person through the help of others; she now even realizes something can be learned from her mother-in-law who she once perceived as judgmental and meddling. Jessie shows us that we need embrace difficult circumstances to help others grow as we grow, as reflected by the redemptive ending that focuses on forgiveness of self and others. Please note that it is not a fairy tale ending; it is more effective and reflective of real life because Jessie and her husband David acknowledge the imperfections of life, love, and marriage and commit to working towards a solid, loving relationship. Readers will appreciate the range of Donice's writing; her work reflects everything from philosophical and spiritual insights to the simple truths of life. The elements of humor and lightheartedness throughout the novel, especially in the characters of her friend Crystal and the sage, "tell it like it is" old woman that Jessie encounters in Chapter 18; these characters remind us not to take ourselves too seriously or judge ourselves too harshly. In order to help Jessie understand that ".what we are seeking actually resides deep within us" (177), the old woman explains: "It's the realization-the disidentification with our current lives-that sends us on a journey to fall in love with ourselves and to embrace our souls again" (183). Donice's writing is intelligent and sophisticated, yet the novel is accessible because her characters are like people we know in real life. The novel highlights both the magical and gritty elements of life and reminds us to not overlook the small miraculous events of our daily lives that can help us develop self love. It teaches us to find strength and wisdom even in the most painful and confusing experiences, but that we need to approach examining and changing our lives with responsibility, determination, and discipline. Jessie Winters is a modern-day literary heroine because she shows us how a person can overcome sorrow and restlessness through openness to spiritual exploration, self love, and forgiveness.

This book was awesome. I know so many people who are church folk who lead hidden lives of abuse, perversion and deceit and it affects generations. While so many tout the institution of the church church as the ultimate answer, Jessie ultimately finds her answers through personal relationships...one of the flesh and one of the spirit. What happens in her journey though is an obstacle course that has her life, reputation and marriage hanging in the balance. I believe that this book gives a voice to so many women who search for answers in their lives that can only be found through a personal relationship with God. It also serves as a wakeup call for married couples who have to deal with so many issues that affect the quality of their lives and the power of trust and faith. I can easily see a screen version of this novel.
