The Outlier by R.J. Stanton

A vividly realistic whodunit. Ride along with the chief of police as he scours the Berkshires for the vicious killer of two elderly women in The Outlier.

Roland Briggs viewed his job of Chief of Police for Wilton, Massachusetts as a form of early retirement. "Nothing ever happens up in those little hill towns," he'd told a friend before taking the job, and for two years, it was just as he'd expected. But then, when two elderly women are viciously murdered, Briggs is forced to return to his old role of homicide detective. He does his job well. A man is caught and quickly convicted, but something doesn't add up. Was the killer framed? Unable to quiet his cop's instinct, Briggs digs deeper. Slowly, he begins to realize that the reason for these crimes is buried in the old and abandoned Wilton School for the Feeble-Minded, up on the hill on the outskirts of town. But can he put all the pieces of the puzzle together before the real killer kills again?

I gave this novel 4 stars only because I am saving the last star for a future book (of which I hope there will be many)! R.J. Stanton has constructed a complex plot that kept this reader frantically trying to figure out who the murderer was up to the very end. The Western Massachusetts setting was authentic and the characters were interesting and believable. This is a great read that is hard to put down. Prepare to neglect the rest of your life for a few days while you wrap yourself up in R.J. Stanton's world!

Here's a murder-thriller with a killer whose motivation you will understand and may even applaud, a plot twist that will catch you by surprise, a context that's at the same time real and gothic, and a detective who might be your brother-in-law.

I was delightfully surprised by the high quality of RJ Stanton's THE OUTLIER. His characters--minor as well as major ones--are totally realistic and unique. The writing shows much intelligence and great insight into the ways people think and feel. The conflicts between characters are neatly drawn and resolved in interesting, yet unpredictable ways that kept me reading the book on the edge of my seat. Bravo to this new highly talented novelist! I look forward to reading more novels from him.

In The Outlier, Stanton has created a truly believable character. Actually two. Actually, a dozen or so. But it's two in particular who struck me the most. Between Roland and Victor, Stanton manifests with subtle brilliance the struggle between good and evil. But wait. I'm not talking Batman and Joker here. These two men become the opposite poles that tug the novel in different directions. One into the mind and deep into a past that is haunted for both men; the other, into the future, into forgetting and burying and moving on. But when people start to die, Briggs can't move on, and it is Victor who begins to catch Briggs and himself in a slow black whirpool into each man's personal history. Stanton somehow manages to do all of this very quietly. What on the surface is a very good murder mystery by a talented new author, is rippling with psychosis just beneath it's mottled cracking skin.

I didn't know what to expect; a first-time author publishing with an unfamiliar publishing house could have meant that I'd just wasted seventeen bucks. But I was pleasantly surprised. After only the first couple chapters I knew I was reading something fresh and exciting. R.J. leaves you hanging at the end of almost every chapter! And it never tapers off. The ending is surprising without being unbelievable and you're left wanting to know when the next 'Stanton' will be available.
