In this fast-paced middle grade fantasy, eleven-year-old Thelma Bee likes to conduct science experiments, aid her father with his antique store, and hang out with her too-often absent mother. Her best friend, Alexander, and she are eager explorers when mysteries start mounting and her father is transported away by evil forces. Soon Thelma seeks help from the local paranormal society and the eerie adventures begin. Brave and persistent, Thelma discovers much more than she ever imagined—about herself and the magical forces in the world. I loved the illustrations peppered throughout the story. Young readers will find this book hard to put down until they have turned the last page. Spooky suspense at its best!

A superb and inventive ghost story!

The scientifically-minded Thelma Bee finds herself in the most hard to believe predicament when her beloved dad ends up getting sucked into a mysterious box. Wait--what? The vivid faux New England small town of Riverfish (think Stars Hollow, but with paranormal undertones) plays host to a most delightful middle grade debut. As a kid, my reading taste was all over the map-- case in point: my two favorite destinations at the library were the Newbery Award winner shelves and the paperback spinny rack for the latest Goosebumps -- and ten year old me would have *devoured* this one. Spooky scenarios, a mystery, and a delightful gang of kiddo characters, combine with vivid writing. Fantastic hand-drawn illustrations complement the story.
