Ann Werner's imagination is fantastically fertile and creates a thriller that you won't be able to put down. When the heroine, Amanda, bought her new condo with her recent inheritance, she thought the second half of her life would be calm, peaceful and maybe even fulfilling. But when she finds things moved from where she left them; when she and her daughter BOTH have mysteriously identical 'bites'; when her neighbors act more and more bizarre, her dream of peace is shattered. Amanda has no choice but to investigate. This self possessed woman isn't about to let someone or something drive her from her new home. So, blindly she goes hunting for answers, all of which fill her with increasing alarm and panic. Had she known what she would encounter on her search, she probably would have run as far away as possible. But now she is stuck with the apparent conspiracies, the strangers with guns, the dead bodies, the unnerving noises and a surprising new acquaintance. She is in danger and no one can save her but herself. How she survives will frighten and thrill you.

It's scary sometimes to take a chance on a new author but right from the get go I could tell that this was a chance well taken. From the minute I met Amanda I liked her and when things started going haywire I was right there with her, chewing my nails in anticipation of what would come next and wondering how would she deal with it? And deal with it she did. No weepy woman here, although this strong heroine allowed herself to cry, and that made her all the more real to me. In her story, Ms. Werner addresses some of the biggest issues of our day and entertains with a 'what if?' scenario that had me turning the pages well after the time I should have been fast asleep. I don't think I'll ever look at my neighbors in quite the same way again! I have no doubt we'll be hearing more from Ann Werner in the years to come.

I could identify with Amanda as many women can. The author writes real life experiences then thrills you with exciting twist and turns. It's one of those books that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It's a must read.

The People Next Door is a fantasy-thriller about a divorced, mother of one, who finally has a place to call her own. Amanda Harris is a self-described aging hypnotist on the downside of middle-age, planning work for another ten years or so and then a quiet retirement up the coast. Fearing the onset of mental illness, possibly triggered by menopause, she is plunged into a nightmare of unexplained events. Time losses, disappearing then re-appearing objects, strange illnesses and freakish deaths all occur with little or no explanation or fanfare. Ann Werner paints a vivid picture of inner-conflict, self-doubt, conviction, and finally courage in this character. The events are edge of your seat, right up to the stunning climax and even more stunning ending.
