Welcome to the life of Harry (latterly 'Pablo') Bernstein, middle child of Jewish émigrés fleeing Hitler's Germany. Curious and clever, unsure and naïve, he grows up subject to all the luck and bad luck due to any man.
Pablo is not the narrator of his own story though - at least, not completely. His tale is told by a constant companion, with him from birth to death, sometimes watching with a dispassionate eye, sometimes actively involved in the action. He has no name but needs none. Those who know him know who and what he is.
Follow Pablo from his birth to his final moments, through childhood and adolescence, medical training, career, marriage(s). It is a typical life, although his adventures do seem to have a certain emphasis to them, perhaps as a result of the narrator's direct influence. Sometimes having a one-track mind is unavoidable, as is evident from the numerous racy anecdotes.
