The Perfect Marriage by Kimberla Lawson Roby

The New York Times bestselling novel from the author of the Reverend Curtis Black series...

ADDICTION. DECEPTION.
PRETTY PICTURES HIDE UGLY SECRETS.

Denise and Derrek Shaw are the perfect American couple. Happily married for fifteen years, they have a wonderful daughter, Mackenzie, successful careers, and a beautiful home in a posh Chicago suburb. They are attractive, respected . . . and hiding a shocking secret: a dangerous addiction to drugs.

It started innocently enough. Denise occasionally used prescription drugs to help her deal with the long hours and demanding nature of her job. Derrek, also under pressure at work, began using cocaine socially with some of his colleagues.

They can quit whenever they want to. At least, that's what Denise would like to believe . . .

As her job becomes more stressful, Denise can no longer get through the day without a fix. Derrek realizes his harmless habit has become anything but, and desperately wants to get clean. However, his attempts are derailed when there is a sudden family tragedy. Once soul mates, now this husband and wife are quickly losing the immense love that had been the cornerstone of their marriage. With her parents spiraling out of control, Mackenzie makes an unexpected move to take matters into her own hands. Is her sacrifice too late-or is there still hope? Is there a final chance to save the Shaw family?

This is a great story that is full of addiction in all forms! The perfect lives that society and those around us sometime dictate often leave us empty. The things we look for to fill this void are not good for the soul, body or mind. KLR does a phenomenal job putting this on paper...this is a MUST read! I love when she writes about 'real world' topics! MitziD

Please welcome Kimberla Lawson Roby to Writer’s Corner. This is my first time reviewing her work. I know that for some of you this author is unfamiliar. She has graciously donated a copy of The Perfect Marriage. Synopsis: Denise and Derek have the perfect marriage. They have the perfect daughter Mackenzie. The extended family is also just as perfect. Are they? Derek’s parents are known drug addicts. One day Derek comes home with a little cocaine and shares some with his wife. Now they share a problem and try to hide it and appear as normal as possible. Then Derek’s twin brother calls and asks for forgiveness from something in their past. Can Derek forgive him? What will finally get Derek and Denise’s attention about their new problem? My Thoughts: Kimberla Lawson Roby writes with passion and ease. Her writing reminds me of Jodi Picot’s style of writing. I have a lot of respect for writer’s who deal with strong topics such as drug abuse. They make it easy for the reader to follow the story. I had a hard time reading this novel because of the subject matter which pertained to drug abuse and addiction. I found this book to be an easy read. Her writing simply flows to me. The plot was different from what I thought. I found the ending to be a surprise. What secrets are you hiding? What is it that you don’t want people to see?

Rushed and bought this book the night before Mrs. Roby came to my local bookstore. Thinking I'll read it later, but at least I'll have a signed copy. Opened it to read chapter one, just to see what it was all about. I could not put it down! I finished it in one day. Roby's characters are so real, you identify with each and every one of them.
