The Phoenix Campaign is a solid follow-up to The Phoenix Candidate. With the Conover-Colton campaign well underway, Grace's secret could not only destroy her relationship with Jared, but could undermine the campaign itself. Keeping secrets drives a wedge between Grace and Jared, and Jared brings in Sasha, a ball-busting campaign manager, to take over with Grace so he can focus on Shep. Things go from bad to worse when tragedy strikes her office. And when Shep's own secret is revealed, things go from truly awful to nearly insurmountable. The romance threads through this story, the same as the first book in the series, but now that Jared has declared his love for Grace, their conflicts arise from secrets, half-truths, and lies. Once again, the strength of the book lies in the politics rather than the romance. Not that the romance isn't well done, its just that romance is pretty formulaic, but the political aspects of this story are incredibly well done, it's like an episode of The West Wing, Scandal, and The Good Wife all rolled up into one. World Building Once again, the political world building is incredible. The scandals, the intrigue, the backstabbing, they're all so juicy and believable. Campaign events, debate prep, everything you think you know about presidential campaigns is here, with lots of steamy sex, because it's D.C. after all. Plot The main plot is still the romance between Grace and Jared, but it's almost a neck-and-neck race to see if the political plot will overtake the lead. There's so much undermining both plot points, with some of the same things affecting both, the author just keeps piling it on. But the campaign is by far the strongest, most unique aspect of the story. That said, it probably wouldn't be nearly as much fun without the romance, so I'd say these two plots are as co-dependent as a vampire and the human he loves. Delicious subplots involve Grace's chief-of-staff, Trey, as well as Shep's big secret, which I never saw coming, although I did figure out the second half of the secret once the first part was revealed. Characters The characters are still complex and believable. There wasn't quite as much character development this time around, but Grace still has a good arc, and Jared has his own arc that's super-compressed. Ending I liked the ending. It wasn't the jaw-dropping conclusion we got in the first book, but it wraps up the main story lines, leaving open just enough for the third and final book in the series. Top Five Things I Enjoyed About The Phoenix Campaign 1. The Politics. I'm still a political junkie, so the political bits were savored like the last bite of a key lime cheesecake. 2. Mama Bea. What's not to love about Trey's mom? She's a spitfire with a heart of gold. 3. Jared. He loves deeply, even though he doesn't always know how to express it. But the way he quietly pulls strings behind the scenes to orchestrate what he wants for Grace is really sweet, even if a little (okay maybe a lot) controlling. 4. Shep Conover. If he was running for president, he'd get my vote right now! 5. Sasha. She grew on me slowly, the same as she did Grace, but by the end, I adored her. She is exactly what Grace needs. Once this series is over, I'd love to see her in another series, or heck, even on The Good Wife. She could give Eli Gold a run for his money! Bottom Line The Phoenix Campaign is equal parts romance and political intrigue and 100% pure fun. Disclaimer I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Grace and Jared are back in the second installment of the series and basking the glow of their newly acknowledged love. Grace has been named the VP for the Conover presidential ticket, the campaign is ramping up ahead of the elections and her days are hectic and filled with travelling and campaign appearances. On the personal front, Grace has a big secret that would have a huge impact on the campaign, her political ambitions and also on her relationship with Jared. Turns out she is not the only one with a life-altering secret. Soon secrets long buried are coming to light and loyalties are tested. In the midst of this, Grace and Jared are getting used to being a couple and trying to define their relationships, both personal and professional. THE PHOENIX CAMPAIGN was a very interesting reading, heavy on relationships and very emotional. Even though the pace was not as fast as the previous book, I really enjoyed it because we got to know the people behind the politicians – their fears, their hurts, their desires, their ambitions, their history, their mistakes and so on. Unfortunately, some of the issues in their personal lives spill over into and negatively impact the campaign that out outside help is needed to salvage the campaign. As with the previous book, the writing is great and shows that the subject was well-researched. With lots of drama, secrets, half-truths and more hot and steamy scenes, the stage is set for the countdown to election night and the highly anticipated conclusion to the series. *I received this book for free from the Author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.*

The Phoenix Campaign by Heidi Joy Tretheway is the second book in her Grace Colton series. This book could be read as a standalone but I loved the first book (The Phoenix Candidate) and you should read it too. Grace is on the campaign trail for her Vice Presidential ticket. That in and of itself makes for a hectic life, non-stop schedule and stress-filled days. When you add in the secret relationship with Jared Rankin, the personal secret she is keeping from him, her toxic mother, and Trey's issues and this vice-presidential gig is getting more complicated and treacherous by the day. An intriguing look into the campaign life and a wonderfully paced tale with romance and intrigue and, best of all, passion! Up next is The Phoenix Decision.

This book had me hooked on SCANDAL. Only this series is a little bit sexier, a little bit more complicated and there’s a whole lot of skeleton in the closet waiting to be discovered. Grace Colton’s life had become busier the moment she was named Vice-President for the Conover Campaign. It was now the Conover-Colton ticket for the November election. But of course, there were still those pictures that were exposed in public, making her love life the center of every intrigue the press brought her way, and the scrutiny of the public makes it very hard for her to make it all public. Not to mention, their relationship is in its early fragile state. Now, she has even bigger secret on her shoulders. She couldn’t tell anyone. Much more Jared. So, she tells her best friend, her running mate, her chief of staff, but not Jared. Their relationship has its up and down, but Jared sure knows how to show her how much he cares. But Grace Colton wanted more than the present – she wanted the future, she wanted stability, she wanted forever: now if only Jared can assure her of that. Maybe. Maybe she can tell him the secret she’d been keeping inside. What happens when Jared learns the truth? It’s going to be a whole lot of trouble on Grace, that’s for sure. One explosive secret after the other, how many more skeletons are inside the closet? Senator Conover has one of his own that had my jaws falling on the floor – now, that I did not see coming. This is politics. This could become dirty. This could ruin everything. Even if they’d lied to protect what the love the most… I never thought politics could be this sexy. Dirty, yes. But ain’t sexy. If you think you love the first book, you haven’t seen this one yet. Grace Colton is on her way to the White House, but she needed to do it without losing herself and the people she loved the most. A total page-turner that will ignite your already-hot nights. Loved every page of it and couldn’t wait for the next book in the series: it just got more interesting with the sneak peek!

Now that Grace is the VP Nominee, life is about to on fast forward and crazy. She is still fighting for her right to decide her path and not be controlled either by the ambition of others or the desire for power. Although this is very altruistic of her, the reality of politics cannot be forgotten. She is pushed and pulled to give the usual non committal answers or non answers. These can be construed as half lies and once you start there is no end in sight. Jared and Grace are the most frustrating couple I have read in a while. Just like their relationship, there is no solid ground yet. They are still going through that growing in love phase where they almost trust each other but they are still skeptical. It must be the nature of their work seeping in to their private life. Politics requires a degree of skepticism... you are never sure just what a politician will do next to win a few votes or donations. In a business where money equals power and ambition runs wild, how can these two finally trust in each other? Gripping, fast paced, full of evil or dubious characters, I find this series fascinating. This installment was one that tugged at my heart deeply. I cannot wait to read the next installment in the series!

This is a hard one to review, because oh my gosh, spoilers--there are potential spoilers everywhere! so I'm going to stick with a lot of general comments--sorry! I love, love, love Grace and Jared. They aren't together as much as I'd like in this one--it's too close to the election to let them spend time on frivolous things like relationships--but when they are, the scenes are just as explosive as in book one. I love these two together. Grace's keeping way too many secrets here, and on the one hand I do get why she feels like she has to, because ohmygoodness, Jared is really keeping things close to the vest, but it's also pretty frustrating. I wanted her to 'fess up about a million times--while at the same time completely sympathizing with her dilemma. Pretty major information is revealed about a character, and I never saw it coming. I'm still digesting--not sure how I feel about it--so I can't blame that character for their reaction to it either.  Still, Huge things happen in the campaign, major stuff goes on between Grace and Jared, Trey is still awesome, Aliza gets to oogle some fine Secret Service butt(!), and Lauren Kennedy Darrow is still evil incarnate--in all, just a fabulous read. I cannot wait for book three! Technically, I think this could be read as a standalone, since everything you need to know is pretty much here. I'd strongly suggest reading book one, The Phoenix Candidate, first though. Reading this one will make you want to go back and pick up the first one anyway--you'll save yourself the time and thank me later. Rating: 4 1/2 stars / A- I received a complimentary copy in exchange for an honest review.
