My kids were little when I first read them Denise Doyens Once Upon A Twice and I was thrilled to see she has a new picture book out! That "tail" has been one of our family classics, going from me reading it aloud to them reciting it on their own. Pomegranate Witch does not disappoint and will take its place on the shelf next to it among our favorite picture books. As an adult reader, you will enjoy reading it aloud over and over, discovering more secrets, and clues in the rhymes. It's a sophisticated book disguised as simple due to the gorgeous lines and colors by Eliza Wheeler's illustrations, but like the Pomegranite Witch herself its a complex story that's great fun to unravel.
Another gorgeous rhyming tale from Denise Doyen--I'm a huge fan of her first picture book, Once Upon a Twice and always keep several copies on hand to give as gifts. In The Pomegranate Witch, we get a an old-time tale about a group of plucky, imaginative kids who go to battle with the crafty and game Pomegranate Witch. Young people will love the action-packed story and Eliza Wheeler's beautiful illustrations. A great book for autumn, Halloween, and any time of year!
Once again, Denise Doyen has written a children's book filled with the most luscious language and imagery. If you've read her first picture book, Once Upon a Twice, then you already know how masterfully she blends story with the most delightful language. (BTW, if you haven't read it, you MUST--it's a wonderful rhyming adventure with gorgeous illustrations created by Barry Moser). The Pomegranate Witch is a feast for both children and adults. The story is exciting, fun, mysterious and unexpected. The language is sophisticated and evocative while still being so accessible to children. Combine all that with the beautiful illustrations created by Eliza Wheeler and you have a book that children will ask for again and again and again. This is truly a special read!
