A great book!  As an elementary counselor I shared this book with students at my school. They loved it and identified with the characters portrayed int the story I am always on the lookout for books that teach character and engage the students. This book creates meaningful conversations that normally could be a little touchy. The kids learned several life lessons and often refer to the story in everyday situations. I highly recommend teachers and families add this one to their bookshelf.

Author Maria Dismondy has done it again, taken real kids with real-life problems and woven them into a hard-hitting tale about a champion with character. Though they do have baseball  in common, the two boys come from totally different worlds. Champ is an over-indulged athlete who has it all but still wants more; Walter is a well-liked boy whose family doesn't even have a car. Is it possible that a FUNdraising challenge will ultimately connect these two boys?   This slugger that  hits a home run in my book as a mom, a teacher, and a counselor. Use it to talk with your children about what really matters on and off the field: kindness, empathy, integrity and friendship. Download the free teachers' guide at the author's website for enrichment that includes conducting a science experiment, studying the geography of baseball stadiums, singing about empathy, designing your own baseball cards, and more. Check out this book; I enthusiastically recommend it!

The Potato Chip Champ, just like Maria Dismondy's other books, teaches such an important lesson to our children. You can't help but walk away a better person after reading about Champ and Walter. Character Education is so important to teach and what better way to do it, than by engrossing your children in this incredibly interesting and poignant story.

Maria's stories are a MUST in my 2nd grade class. I'm really big on character education but don't have any resources. I always turn to Maria's books for a wonderful life lesson. This story teaches empathy and contentment in a silly story. Maria writes stories that children need to hear. I am anxiously waiting another book from Maria. I have them ALL and still want MORE!
