Overview

The Historian chances upon Surac, a land where people's destinies are defined by powerful pendants they have from birth, called Stones. Those whose Stones give them useful skills call themselves Creators, and isolate themselves from all others with a wall that splits the entire continent. When Aric, a Creator blacksmith, has a son born with a Stone that marks him for violence and destruction, they find themselves in danger from those they called their friends.

When the boy, Sadavir, is ultimately banished, he discovers secrets far darker than the villagers' petty prejudices. On the far side of the wall, he learns the origin of the Stones' magic and a war that dates back centuries. As he uncovers the true power locked in the Stones, he must find a way to unite ancient enemies in order to save his family. To stop a genocide, Sadavir must face his own destiny of violence.

Was just a little slow to start, but after a little bit I really got into it and really connected with the characters. Excellent fantasy.

A refreshingly lucid allegory of good and evil, pride and humility, and the power of togetherness. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions (especially of all things mechanical) and insightful commentary by the Historian. Some blunt phrasing and awkward dialogue could have used polishing. The pacing was good, though the scope of the story seemed a bit vast for the time it took to tell it. I liked the optimism and gentle encouragement of the narrator. I look forward to reading the other books in the series.

I loved this story! I find the overarching enigma of the Historian very intriguing, and cannot wait for his next books. Write faster! I want to know who he is!!

Lance sold me on this book while attending Salt Lake Comic Con. I purchased the book while there on September 6, 2014. On Thursday, September 11th, I was able to start reading the book. I read chapter one that day and chapter two on Friday. Saturday evening I say down to read and ended up finishing the book at 1am. I am very glad that I purchased this book and am looking forward to reading the next one, which I purchased at the same time. Lance thank you for sharing this world with me. Mike

I loved this story and am glad I stumbled onto it. For being free I expected it to be short and rushed but this had a great deal of work poured into it. I look forward to read other tales of the Historian and his travels.
