Overview

The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang

Paris, at the dawn of the modern age:

Prince Sebastian is looking for a bride—or rather, his parents are looking for one for him. Sebastian is too busy hiding his secret life from everyone. At night he puts on daring dresses and takes Paris by storm as the fabulous Lady Crystallia—the hottest fashion icon in the world capital of fashion!

Sebastian’s secret weapon (and best friend) is the brilliant dressmaker Frances—one of only two people who know the truth: sometimes this boy wears dresses. But Frances dreams of greatness, and being someone’s secret weapon means being a secret. Forever. How long can Frances defer her dreams to protect a friend? Jen Wang weaves an exuberantly romantic tale of identity, young love, art, and family. A fairy tale for any age, The Prince and the Dressmaker will steal your heart.

I am not generally a huge fan of graphic novels. (I'm not snobbish about them, I swear! They just aren't generally my thing.) But I tore through this sweet tale in one sitting. There's so much to love about this story - two intensely likable characters making discoveries about their world and their place in it, a tender friendship/romance that blooms alongside conflict but never takes over the story, a historical setting that brings to life parts of the past that have been hidden for too long. There are no easy answers to either Sebastian's or Frances's dilemmas, but both find happiness anyway when they learn to be true to themselves. A compelling, unique, funny, and touching story.

Omigosh, this was fantastic. I loved every second of this book. I don't even know where to begin for the beauty and wonder that is this graphic novel. Okay, the art was STUNNINGLY beautiful. I mean, literally every single panel was filled with just gorgeous illustrations. I was even obsessed with the font? Wang not even drew beautiful characters and settings, but each piece of fashion was AMAZING. I just marveled at each beautiful page that I came across, and I desperately need more Jen Wang art in this world. The characters were fantastic as well. Sometimes, plot and characterization can skim the surface in a book this short, but Wang made extremely complex, in-depth, and wonderfully relatable and human characters. I loved Sebastian and Frances. Even the side characters like Sebastian's parents and Emile were great as well. I loved the storyline as well. It was a fantastic journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance. It was such a beautiful journey that we went on with Frances and Sebastian. Not only the personal journey was fantastic but Frances's journey to be the next big dressmaker was wonderful as well. This was just such a beautiful novel, and I enjoyed it so much. It took me on an emotional journey of self-discovery along with such such beautiful art and wonderful characters. If you're looking for the entire package graphic novel, this is itttttttttttttttttttttt. 5 crowns and a Tiana rating - and totally on the edge of getting a spot on the favorites shelf. I must do the think over, but it's so desperately close to getting on there.

Every bit as charming as the whole world is saying. I loved Frances, Sebastian/Crystallia, and the whole ensemble. Jen Wang's art is wonderfully emotive and her script is artful in its efficiency and grace. Sebastian/Crystallia's journey to acceptance from themself and others, and Frances's unwavering ambition and discovery of kindness, are equally satisfying to read.

I'm still a bit new to graphic novels, but even I can recognize when something is past amazing. And this mt friends, is past amazing. From the writing, to the art, it was all amazing and because of it I have added all of Wang's work to my TBR. Prince Sebastian is looking for a bride. Unfortnuately, his heart is not in the pursuit. He's more interested in keeping a secret from his entire kingdom. At night he becomes the beautiful Lady Crystallia, the current fashion icon! The only person who knows his secret is his best friend, the dressmaker, Frances. But Frances has put her own dreams on hold to help keep his secret. How long can she put his dreams ahead of hers? I loved reading Sebastain's journey of identity. I loved how he was portrayed in both Wang's writing style and her art. In the art he seemed like a basic prince when he was being Prince Sebastain, but at night as Lady Crystallia, he comes alive. I imagine that's how he felt on the inside as well and Wang did a great job at portraying it. I also loved the family and friendship dynamic in this one. I don't want to be too spoilery, but it did not end up the way I expected it to.The friend and the family dynamic. It turned into so much more. I can honestly say I've never cried over a graphic novel before, but for this one and the amazing relationships portrayed, I definitely did. This graphic novel was so much more than I expected and I can see myself reading this a couple more times before sending it back to the library. Jen Wang is a new to me artist, but after my love for The Prince and the Dressmaker, I can assure you this will not be my last novel by her.

I love this book! The characters are amazing, the fashion sense is to die for, and the story is wholly charming. It’s family and friendship and sense of self, packaged in a fantastic artistic style. Frances and Sebastian are goals, frankly. An incredible addition to any library, especially where graphic novels are popular.
