Overview

The Prize: Tales From a Revolution - Vermont by Lars D. H. Hedbor

Caleb's father is serving with Ethan Allen's Green Mountain Boys as the long-anticipated open war against the British rages up and down the length of Lake Champlain. Between his duties on the family farm and constant worry about his father's safety, the young man's attentions are already fully occupied when a fateful encounter with an unlikely neighbor changes everything. Pulled into new intrigues and new friendships, Caleb finds himself on a path that changes his life - and which will affect the outcome of the whole war.

"Wonderful! Lars Hedbor has magnificently captured the zeitgeist of Colonial Vermont! He seamlessly blends his tale with the events of the American Revolution in the Champlain Valley!"
- Daniel O'Neil, Executive Director, Ethan Allen Homestead Museum

First, to be up front, the Lars happens to be my brother-in-law. That being said, anyone who knows me knows that I will not hold my tongue if I dislike something. I promised that I would buy this book and read it. While it took me some time to get the book, it took me no time to get through the book. I found myself unable to put it down for anything but work and sleep.(which I didn't get much of while I read the book) The characters, the story, the descriptions, all done right. Right enough to keep an admitted non-reader plow though a book cover to cover in no time at all. Very nice Job Lars!! Thanks for this story!

I got this book the other night. Once it was downloaded I had a very hard time putting it down! Lars does a fantastic job of putting you right into Caleb's shoes. I was engrossed into the world right beside Caleb and followed his journey. I am from the area the book is about. If you are from Vermont or just interested in the time period, I would suggest this great book as it open's your eye's into a different world!

A very informative and entertaining tale from little-known fragments of our American history. These kinds of details, housed within an entirely logical family story, illustrate the resolve of the people who, collectively, formed our nation.

Enjoyed the book. Lightweight, but don't need to be en-wrapped in great detail to spin a good yarn. My history and geography says that Lake Champlain is in New York, and at the beginning of the Revolution, the eastern coast of the lake was considered New York. A well spun yarn. Folks died, but that's reality, especially in time of war.

Really enjoyed this book. I found myself googling to know more or refreshing my memory. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Vermont where my family spent so many summers vacationing as well. Well written and engaging.

Lars D. H. Hedbor has made a really nice novel out of some of our American History, although fictionalizing some of it without breaking from reality, just to make the novel more interesting and readable. This is a very fast read ... quite enjoyable ... just enough suspense to make it interesting ... yet giving the reader a solid taste of history "way back when." I'm glad I read this work ... I'm sure you will enjoy it too.
