The Promise I Kept: My Journey with Dad from Home Care Through Hospice by Jackie Madden Haugh

The Promise I Kept is a poignant, funny, and often heartbreaking story of a daughter's journey to live up to a vow that she never put her father, Jack, into a nursing home; his greatest fear for his final days. Thirteen years later, now a single mother, the marker would be called in after her mother's passing. For the next nie years, Jackie Madden Haugh would watch over her father's care, first in his home with live-in help and finally with her. Totally unprepared for her new role, Jackie thought it would be an easy job. After all, her kids saw her as Super Mom ready to take on all of life's messes. But she quickly found her world filled with adult diapers, a pharmacy of pills, and days heavily laced in utter boredom. Cut off from friends, her children and work, she began to crumble. As the days melted together, Jackie came to understand the rocky road they traveled was not about what she was doing for him, but what her father was teaching her that would change the trajectory of how she'd continue to live her life: in constant gratitude and with a heart filled with enormous love.

Love, Happiness, Family Bonds & Ties, Caregiving, Nurturing, Emotions, Illness, Losses, Educational, Journeys and Much More . . . This story is non-fiction. I truly enjoyed walking this journey with Jackie. Her story is as heartbreaking as it was beautiful. No one ever said that life would be a simplified one. It takes courage to take on your life to include someone else! I won’t share what the story is about. Many other reviewers presented those details. I will inform you that . . . This author has done a superb job of bringing in content and structure. She presents an in-depth and colorful picture of the characters; the storylines; and the scenes. Throughout the story the “show me” moments were profound. All-in-all, it's what makes a great read. That in itself is skillful of this author’s ability to be a storyteller. “The Promise I Kept” is interesting, educational, enlightening, touching, emotional, and heartbreaking. And it’s all wrapped neatly behind those pages. If you’re going through the journey as a Caregiver, this beauty is a read for you! Flipping through the pages, its descriptive elements drew me into visualizing every tiny (detailed) moment. I laughed, I cried, I felt the pain and emotions. That’s how deeply buried I was in this walk. What a gratifying story! And yes, it is a bit of a tearjerker. So to this author, I say “Thanks for sharing your journey with all the unpleasantness experienced.” Face it, we all engage in those things called “Promises.” But do we keep them? She did! Jackie, you made that promise and you kept it! Through all your hard work, dedication, and determination, I salute you!

The kind of book you read, love and then share with a friend. Loved the honesty, humor, and sincerity this author uses when writing about such a tough time period for both her and her aging father at the end of his life. Whether you are in a similar experience with your own parent or just want to read a heartwarming memoir, this book is for you. You will laugh, you might cry, and you will definitely think about how your time should be spent here on this earth with those that you love. I have also found this is a great gift for friends who are looking for solace as they go through a similar time with their own parents.

This is a beautiful, honest, and raw story that shares Jackie's journey in taking care of her father in his final years. It details her inner battle between frustration and pure love and how it was all worth it to have gained invaluable lessons and precious time. There are many lessons to be taken from this story, but the ones that stand out the most are to look for beauty in times of hardship, focus on the love, and take advantage of the time you have with those you love. It will leave you feeling warm hearted and will also inspire you to revaluate the relationships in your life.
