Overview

Rayne Shelby has spent her entire life trying to earn the approval of her high-powered family, with the hope of one day managing her late grandfather’s prestigious Idaho lodge. But when she makes a mistake that puts her future in jeopardy, she faces an impossible choice: defy her family or deny her dream. The only way to fix the mess she’s created is to enlist the help of her neighbor, Levi, the apprentice of her family’s greatest enemy. And if Rayne gets caught crossing the divided property lines, the consequences will be irreparable.

Levi Harding has never forgotten the August night he shared with Rayne when they were teens—or the way she later rejected him. Despite his warring instincts, he can’t ignore her plea for help or the spark that’s ignited between them. But now, as wildfires bear down on their town and family secrets are revealed, their newfound alliance might just go up in smoke.

So much to love about this story! 1. The writing swept me out of my life, my house, my daily routine and raptured me to a whole new place. Idaho. I know, it’s not the first place you might think about sweeping your self away to…but trust me…Idaho is stunning! The pacing is fast, and the story just kept twisting and turning and growing, layer upon layer. 2. The characters are D-E-E-P. They go beyond three dimensional, to the point where I fully expect to bump into them next time I go to Idaho. (And now I may actually go there). They feel so real, and they act so consistently, it’s a true pleasure to read these people through to their happy ending. Yes, it ends well. I’m giving that away. But HOW it ends well, is the question which will drive you from page to page, chapter to chapter until it’s two in the morning and you remember your alarm is set for 6:30am. Yikes. (Yes, that happened). 3. Ms. Deese knows romance. The yearning, the fighting, the excellent reasons the characters should or should not be together. I rode the turbulence of this relationship like a small plane through a stormy sky, feeling every bump, every dip, and every loop-de-loop of emotion. It’s one of my favorite reading experiences. And that’s truly what this book is: an experience. So much more than a typical novel, this story breathes as it reads. 4. I’m ready to read this book again. I know, that sounds crazy. Especially since I just finished reading it. And I rarely re-read. This book is better than most, truer than most, and I can assure the reader it will stick with you longer than most. And you might want to go to Idaho after reading it (fair warning). I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.

Wow. Nicole Deese has truly become one of my must-read authors, and just when I think her stories can't be any more artfully written, the layers of story and complexity of her characters so masterfully executed, the next story releases. I loved The Promise of Rayne, couldn't put it down, and credit the author for her ability to make readers empathize with these characters in such a rare way. More books, please! **I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.

Have I read everything Nicole Deese has written? Yes. Have I loved pretty much everything I've read of hers? Yes. Was this book everything I thought it would be? Yes. There, we got that out of the way. Now you know how much I love Nicole Deese. Her books are lighthearted, fun, easy reads with characters I can cling to and stories that touch my heart. Can we talk about book boyfriends for a sec, though? Because, sure, I could rave about this book and her writing and how the story developed and kept me turning pages with its intrigue and all that. But, what I really want to talk about is Levi. :-) I've read plenty of books with swoon-worthy heroes. Books with heroes I could connect to. Ones that were "real" and not too handsome, too smart, too muscular, too perfect. And I truly appreciate those kinds of heroes because let's face it--have any of us met and/or married the perfect man? (All joking aside, I think I did, but we're talking alternate reality here, so stick with me.) My point is, I've read about many a hero I would have loved to have been the real deal in my own life. (Haven't we all?) But I've never had a book boyfriend. Until now. Ahhh.... Levi. I have officially made him my book boyfriend. Because I love him. And he is exactly what I would imagine a book boyfriend to be. He's edgy, hard-working, creative, and fiercely loyal. I also imagine him to be drop-dead gorgeous, because who reads a romance novel and imagines an ugly hero, but I digress. Levi didn't need good looks. The guy was amazing. And now I'd like to live in Shelby Falls. That is all. You'll enjoy the book because in true Deese fashion, it's sweet, there's some depth to it, and there's definitely sparks. Lots of push and pull between Rayne and Levi, a tale of forbidden love, of family secrets, of sacrifice. You'll take away something for yourself in reading this book as well, all wrapped up in a character named Ford who "refused to allow [someone's] hatred to corrode his soul. He'd refused to allow bitterness to corrupt his character. He'd refused to allow anger to taint his compassion. And he's chosen to forgive his enemies and to love them too." I think that's a lesson we could all apply to our lives, don'tcha think? But trust me on this: you'll LOVE the book because of Levi. :-) Okay, okay... and Rayne, too.

The Promise of Rayne, written by Nicole Deese, is the second book I've read by this author and once again thrilled with the privilege to read this Christian Romance. My favorite character: Levi, most definitely! Levi is the kind of guy all girls in their 20's dream of getting. Deese created this character as the all inclusive yummy guy...the looks, kind heart, hard worker, honest, caring, loving, and so insightful! He knows the different sides of the Shelby family story yet holds all of it in confidence in hopes that the parties would figure out the truth. One of the quotes I pulled from this story was, "Character is built on every decision we make, especially those we make in secret." How true this is in this story. Deese shows through these characters the choices people have in telling the truth and in choosing forgiveness...or not. I did find the beginning of the story a bit harder to get my head wrapped around, but quickly came to understand where the author was going and thoroughly enjoyed the storyline, the building of the characters and LOVED the ending! I recommend this book! I received this book through Netgalley. All thoughts and comments in this review are my own.

I love feuding families that produce love. And this book was the best version I've ever read! Watching events unfold between Rayne and Levi was wonderful. And the feud between the families was just different enough from all the other versions that it truly was unique. My heart really felt for Rayne throughout this book. I cannot imagine working so hard only to always fall short in the eyes of her family. But I loved her persistence throughout the story. She is my favorite type of heroine. She is strong, passionate, and knows what she wants. Then there is Levi. He is amazing. What first drew me to him was his desire to help others. And I love his devotion to Ford and how he treats him as a father just as much as a boss. Another part about this story that really drew me in was knowing that these fires that start really do threaten the livelihood and homes of so many people. It was hard to read about evacuations and knowing that it isn't really fiction and that sometimes after a person evacuates they never get to go home again. I cannot imagine that. Of course the fires weren't the only sparks in this book. There were plenty of sparks between Rayne and Levi. Their story was actually painful at times to read as they dealt with personal issues, family issues, and even job issues. I appreciated the real life obstacles they overcame to reach their happily ever after. There were moments when I was frustrated with the decisions they made - especially Rayne - but there were also so many swoon-worthy moments and le sigh moments that I just loved. And the kisses. So many great kisses! Oh and did I mention this book has a great surprise in it? You'll have to read it to find out what it is but I have to admit it was a great turning point in the story. I truly loved every page of this story and couldn't put it down! I cannot wait to read whatever Deese comes up with next. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. I absolutely loved this story!!!! Some books you read you will like and some you will actually love, but this book was so much more for me. It literally swallowed me heart and soul. Even after finishing this book I found myself thinking about the characters and picking the book up to reread certain parts. It is rich with characters that are engaging and complex, but the plot took me straight to the small town in Idaho. The imagery literally brought the place alive in my mind and I settled in for the endearing story of a beautiful, young woman who's life is literally about to explode around her in the blink of an eye. This story has elements of mystery, trust, grief, and love. Rayne's grandfather passed away when she was young, but she has a wealth of memories that she holds close to her heart. The grief she holds is raw and real. She has always tried to make her family proud of her and the work she does at the prestigious lodge her family owns. Her father is governor of the state, but that has never affected who she really is. When he arrives at the lodge to announce his plans to run again for office Rayne makes a mistake that involves their neighbor, Levi Harding, that puts everything she has worked so hard for out of her reach. This is a book that I would recommend to anyone. I received this book from Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Y’all. This book. It gets inside your heart and won’t let go. So does Levi (SWOON). Levi and Rayne are kinda like Romeo and Juliet, only way more interesting. And they don’t die at the end. (that’s not really a spoiler; it’s ok) Despite their instant (and sizzling) attraction that’s withstood both the test of time and the barrier of being “off limits”, Rayne still can’t quite find herself free to relax in their relationship. I personally think this is because Levi keeps kissing her senseless and she can’t think straight, but that’s just me. Levi has his faults, sure, but he’s mostly just delightfully swoonworthy. And the boy can KISS!! And while he’s yummy in his farming clothes, he’s even more so when he gets gussied up. Whew. Keep those fans and fainting couches handy for this one, y’all. So, yes there’s Levi. But that’s not even the best part of Nicole Deese’s latest book. The Promise of Rayne puts both bitterness and mercy in the spotlight and does so without being preachy. In one gut-punch moment of the story, the stark chasm between the two is hauntingly clear and it’s a scene I know I will be thinking about for a long time to come. Bottom Line: The Promise of Rayne is a romance, yes – and a darn good one – but it’s so much more. It’s a convicting look at how bitterness can tear a person apart and how its flames spread to everyone that person touches. It’s a sobering example of the way “desperation undermines wisdom“, but it’s also a tender picture of the power of forgiveness in action as well as an inspiring fight song for mercy. Do not miss this book! (I’m even hoping there’s a series to come – I’m not ready to give up these characters quite yet.) (I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.)

When you come from a well known family and your name is the same as the town’s name, you’re expected to do what everyone wants you to do. Unfortunately for Rayne, she really doesn’t want to be so well known or go into the politics that her family is in. She just wants to run the bed and breakfast lodge that her grandparents started years ago and help others in the community as best as she can. She makes one mistake and now she’s having to fix it. However, the way she chooses to fix it causes more problems and she truly hopes no one in her family will find out what she’s done. It all has to do with Levi. Levi is the boy next door who she once wanted to spend time with, but her family said NO. You see, he lives with the family enemy. Yet she really doesn’t know why they’re the enemy and those who do know won’t tell Rayne why. The answer might change everything Rayne knows and believes to be true. This book brought out lots of emotions in me. I experienced suspense, angry, sadness, demands for justice, warm memories, laughter, a bit of romance, and the hope of God’s love. I received a copy of this wonderful book from the publisher to read. All opinions are my own. I LOVED this book and HIGHLY recommend it!

This book deserves more than the allowable 5 stars. It truly does. The Promise of Rayne is one of the best books of 2016, in my opinion. I've read several of Nicole Deese's books before and when this one came out, I knew that I would want to read it based on her earlier novels. It is profound in its depth of emotion, characterization and God's grace. Secrets have been kept for 18 long years in the Shelby family and now those secrets are beginning to affect lives. But those who know the secrets are bound by promises of silence. You can read the synopsis for yourself without me taking space for it here. I love it when an author engages my emotions at the very beginning of a book and continues to draw me in further with each page I read. It's almost as if these characters have just jumped off the pages of the book and sat in the room with me as I read. Deese has truly plumbed the depth of human emotions with her characters. I felt the hurt so incredibly deeply in my heart as I read. I marveled at the grace other characters poured out to ones that I felt didn't deserve that grace. But that's what God does: He gives grace to us when we never deserved it and never will. That's because He's a good God. Truly, I was ministered to by this book for a particular situation I am dealing with in my own life. The Promise of Rayne is a wonderful book, astounding and profound and one that you won't soon forget after closing the pages of the book, one that is destined to be read again. I enjoyed it tremendously. *I was gifted with a copy of this book. This review is my own opinion and honest.

This author is amazing! Once again Nicole Deese presented us with a book that immediately captured my attention, enticed me to keep reading into the wee hours of the morning, and left me thinking about Rayne, Levi and the town of Shelby Falls long after I finished the book. She is excellent at introducing main characters that you instantly connect with…and I especially loved her supporting characters in this book; Rayne’s cousin Gia, Levi’s boss Ford, the Shelby Lodge cook Delia…they add such depth to the story. Everyone in Shelby Falls has a story, even if you only see a small part of it. I loved Rayne & Levi’s story! And there are definitely some twists in this book that I didn’t see coming. It was an awesome book teaching us the true definition of grace, love and forgiveness. Here’s hoping we get to hear a bit more of Gia’s story sometime soon! Looking forward to the next book from this author!

The tale of star-crossed lovers Rayne and Levi reflects themes of family loyalty, trust, and the unconditional love of the Savior. Rayne has never made it a secret that her priorities lie with running the lodge that is her beloved grandfather's legacy. Dealing with difficult relatives makes it both hard and easy to turn to Levi when he offers friendship. I admired her compassionate and open nature, but was frustrated that she was cowed by her domineering uncle and father. The family dynamics and mysterious secrets are a huge part of what gets in the way of Rayne and Levi's relationship. I loved the fun they had as they opened up to each other despite working for "enemy" camps, and the way Levi encourages her to be herself and supports her dreams is endearing. The chemistry between them is crackling hot and the tension builds as they grow closer together yet keep their romance under wraps. The family secrets are alluded to throughout the book so I could hardly wait until they were finally revealed to Rayne so she could see everyone for who they truly were. A wonderful clean contemporary romance! (I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.)

Of the dozens of books I have read this year, The Promise of Rayne, by Nicole Deese, is by far one of my favorites. After reading only the first chapter, it was clear to me that this book was something truly refreshing and special. Nicole Deese is a talented writer, and her words drew me in from the start. Chapter after chapter, I became even more captivated by the characters and their unfolding story. The sweet moments of romance, the intriguing mystery, and the search for truth were all satisfying components in this well-paced story of love and redemption. The Promise of Rayne not only entertained me from the first page to the last, it also encouraged me and uplifted me. The relatable characters and their unique journey will remain a part of my heart for a long time to come. The Promise of Rayne is a novel that I can wholeheartedly recommend to my friends, to my family, and to anyone searching for a great book to read. I was provided a copy of this book by the publisher. Rayne is from a very powerful, controlling, and influential family. Years ago, there was a falling out with a close neighbor and family friend and now everyone on that property is an enemy, including hard-working Levi. My husband and I grew up pretty close to one another and I can't image life if our families were enemies. This story is kind of like a modern day Romeo and Juliet, with a few twists. Neither family would be happy to find Rayne and Levi consorting around town together, whether publicly or privately, as it's strictly forbidden, yet there's something there that continuously draws these two together. I could feel the nervous hesitation on Rayne's part, as they cautiously forge a friendship. Levi's mild frustration is evident in their encounters, on many levels, as he struggles to find a balance that keeps everyone around him happy. The moments of trust, doubt, deceit, angst, and love are woven throughout in a masterfully brilliant way. The reader is emotionally engaged with these characters and their situations to the point of feeling like a secondary character in the book. I found myself wanting to tell a few people off, as well as swooning over some sweet and stolen moments, multiple times. Watching the sparks fly between these two almost started a wildfire of my own in my heart. Things come to a head as this town bands together to help those affected by a raging wildfire. Eyes are opened with the smoky air; hearts are stained with the sooty ash; and true feelings are recognized with the threat of danger. I loved every moment that I spent in Idaho, being a part of this story! Content: mild moments of peril; mild, swoony romance; very mild reference to religion. *I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are solely my own and I received no compensation for them.*

Small town. Family drama. Small business. Political posturing. Secrets. Idaho. Loyalty and love. Rayne Shelby is an honest, hard-working, and compassionate young woman who dreams of honoring her grandfather’s legacy by managing the family’s lodge. With the help of his mentor, who is more of a father figure than an employer, Levi Harding has pulled himself up by the bootstraps and become a successful entrepreneur. As teenagers, Levi and Rayne shared a brief yet special connection before her high-powered family came between them. Years later, they still have that spark and let the wooing commence! I love, love, love the wooing!!! This is another fabulous story from Nicole Deese and I highly recommend it! I requested the opportunity to read and review this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own.
