Overview

The Protection of Ren Crown by Anne Zoelle

Book #2 in the Ren Crown series.

Barely surviving her first term at college, all Ren wants to do over break is relax and bond with her roommate--not get eaten by a sentient building or attacked on the street. But with increasingly open warfare brewing between the magical factions and Layers of the world, this time, Ren will not fail in making sure everyone she loves stays safe and protected.

That includes doing things like filling her parents' house with personal art heavily embedded with wards, bubble-wrapping her increasingly imperiled roommate, and even making sure that a certain sexy thorn-in-her-side continues to breathe free air.

Finding herself on duty protecting the entire university alongside campus god Alexander Dare...was not what she'd had in mind.

But this time it's not only her life on the line. And Ren will do anything to protect those she loves.

Even better than the first!  I thoroughly enjoyed this second installment of the ren crown series. It is a new, refreshing twist within the teen fantasy genre.  Fast-paced, I blew through this book only to start it over for a second time.  The focus of this book deals with main protagonist, Ren, newly realized feral art mage, striving to protect those she loves from impending danger.  The world building is fantastic and the characters have real depth.  Ren is probably one of my favorite fictional characters written to date.  The embodiment of an actual artist, she doesn't hesitate to pile on project after project. Her spunk and overall craziness makes her a very fun character to read.  I also loved her sense of loyalty to those around her.  Contrary to many female heroines of today, Ren is not some petty teenager that is offended by the smallest thing.  She gives second chances, where many would not.  Another thing that makes this book even better than the first is the deeper look into some of the other characters' personalities.  We get a closer look at the ever mysterious Alexander Dare who only appeared in the background of the first book.  Constantine also takes his place at the forefront of the novel many times. Finally we see an even greater development of the friendship between Olivia and Ren.  In addition to the ones we already know, we are also introduced to a few more quirky, fun characters.    Overall this book was just an excellent read.  The plot was amazing and fast paced, the characters all lovable, and the world building excellent.  The ending was surprising and left me wanting the third book immediately.  With so many things to come, this book was a great sequel that promises to lead into an epic series.

Anne Zoelle manages to spins the classic tale of "teen discovering magic, attending magic lessons, and trying to save the world" into a fascinating multi-Layered (pun intended) story that I had trouble putting down and not immediately re-reading. The second book in the series, The Protection of Ren Crown, was delightfully wraught and contains substancially more political undertones than the first novel. All together, the series shows incredible world building surrounding a goofy but lovable and artistic teen's journey through a brillantly magical school while dodging a bloody revolution and a government cage. I truly loved the school environment depicted as it reminded me of a cross between my own small weird-but-awesome liberal arts college experience and real world videogaming. My one lament was the stark cliffhanger ending that occured at about half the page length of the first novel that triggered much desperate forward clicking. Tldr: Awesomely unique. Go read it already.

Like the title says, I find myself incredibly impatient for the next book. I've now added the series to my rotation of favorites I trot out on a semi regular basis for a reread. I just wish I knew who the author really is, as I definitely should be a fan (if I am not already). That said, I enjoyed the writing style and the character development. The storyline in places moved rather quickly, and as such, at times it required a pause to see what I had obviously not fully ingested to stay along with it. A fact that I rather enjoyed as a go over of the passage always showed that I had missed something or forgotten some piece in my haste to reach a conclusion. My taste varies and I found this series by happenstance, the original cover looking very much like most in the genre. But I was looking for something to pass the time and have stumbled onto a few gems by buying this way, I'm glad I bought the first book. Between it and the second I probably checked a thousand times to see if anything new had gone up under the same pen name. Waiting for the third book has already brought me close to the same number ha. If your a fan of the genre or simply of the fantastical, you should give the series a go.

I loved the first book and was very excited when the second book came out. This book did not disappoint me. Now I will have to wait for the third book in the series to come out. If you like magic romance and suspense you will not be dissapointed.
