I'll admit to a wee amount of trepidation at reading 'The Protector Heals His Cowboy', book five in Bellann Summers's 'Rescue for Hire West' series. I didn't like Carson when I first met him. He cheated on Jimmy and really hurt him, and he lied to Tristen causing discord between the brothers. Granted, I felt for Carson and the horrible abuse and trauma he suffered at the hands of Sammie, Flyer's ex, but Carson's whole reasoning to hook up with Sammie was to get revenge on Jimmy and Tristen. He definitely didn't deserve to suffer the way he did, but I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to warm up to him. Well, it's obvious I'm just a big, gooey, soft-hearted mess. Carson is so pathetic and I really hate using that word to describe him, but everything terrifies him, he can't prevent the memories and the fear from taking over. He broke my heart. In my mind the fact that he was still alive and still trying made him so very strong. Most people in his situation would have given up and died but even though Carson is scared, he doesn't want to live like this, and Isaiah provides him a tiny kernel of hope. "He had changed. Inside Carson was a broken man, and yet looking back, he never again wanted to be the a** of a man he once was." Isaiah is amazing. All of these men are truly fantastic but it takes someone with patience, love, and true understanding to help a traumatized abuse victim. Since Isaiah is the weapons expert and can kill a man in many different ways, how he is with Carson was very touching. Isaiah continually made sure Carson knew he was safe and no harm would come to him. It was beautiful to watch Carson learn to trust and love the giant man. Everyone should be so lucky to have a fantastic man who loves you no matter what. A heart-wrenching and beautiful love story to add to the series. Thank you, Bellann, I did just want to hug Carson.
