Description: This fourth edition of a manual on psychiatric interviewing substantiates the techniques discussed with peer-reviewed resources and is updated with DSM-5 criteria. This edition also has accompanying ebook version.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a concise, pocket-sized tool for completing a psychiatric interview. This is a worthy objective, especially for beginning clinicians, and this manual meets this objective well.
Audience: The audience is beginning clinicians who do psychiatric assessments as part of their training. This includes psychiatric residents, medical students, psychology and social work interns, and residents in other medical fields who need to do on-the-spot assessments. The author, an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine. has written for numerous publications, is editor-in-chief of a monthly newsletter, The Carlat Psychiatry Report, and the author pf a well-respected and influential blog, The Carlat Psychiatry Blog.
Features: This manual explains the basic components of a psychiatric assessment, techniques for interviewing difficult patients, and strategies to neatly formulate diagnoses using DSM-5 criteria. The book reads quickly and easily and includes an essential contents box at the beginning of each chapter with the most salient points. There are also mnemonics for remembering important criteria for diagnoses and sample interview dialogues throughout. One of the strongest features is an appendix with interview templates, which can be photocopied, and informational handouts on common psychiatric disorders which can be given to patients.
Assessment: This book is concise in its presentation of the psychiatric interview, but it does an excellent job of highlighting important interviewing techniques and addressing common pitfalls that beginning clinicians encounter. The many sample interviews and clinical vignettes make it a quick, easy, and interesting read that is reasonable for even a busy intern to get through. Unexpected features of the book are the templates, pocket cards, and handouts that are available at the back of the book. They are outstanding and enable readers to actually practice what they are learning. They are such a nice supplement that I plan to print and use some of them myself. The accompanying ebook is identical to the print version, but it is nice to have for reference when medical students or residents may not have the book with them on the ward.
