The veteran sportswriter/author, cowriter of Dan Rather's The Camera Never Blinks (Ballantine, 1984), offers brief biographies of 29 quarterbacks he calls ``legendary.'' Herskowitz's coverage ranges from Hall of Famers Sammy Baugh and Johnny Unitas and prospect Joe Montana, to journeymen Gary Kubiak and Babe Laufenberg. He assesses each one's achievements, low points, and personality. Included is ex-Washington star Doug Williams, whose caustic story, Quarterblack ( LJ 9/15/90), also came out this fall, but curiously missing is another legend--Sid Luckman. Brisk reading for football fans, this should attract their libraries.-- Morey Berger, formerly with Monmouth Cty. Lib., Manalapan, N.J.
