Overview

The Raven Coronet by Christina Briley

Even the youngest child in the United Lands knew the legend of the Raven Coronet -- the crown of charisma that had united the world under one ruler -- but no one believed it still existed.

Or almost no one.

Young Thaedra's difficult childhood becomes an even more trying womanhood when her stepfather marries her off as part of a scheme to obtain the storied artifact.

But some fairy tales are best forgotten...

About the Author

Christina Briley was born, raised, and still resides in the Greater Boston area. The third of four daughters, she grew up in a large, old house full of books and cats. Her professional resumé is an eclectic one; it includes wedding gowns, belly dancing, textiles, graphics, and making athletic shoe prototypes, as well as writing. An avid ballroom and folk dancer, she is currently working on a non-fiction book about the history of social dance during New England's Industrial Revolution entitled Twirling Jennies.
A few years back, Ms. Briley and her adored second husband downsized from their sprawling, antique, one-time brothel into a condo in a converted textile mill. They have three adult children and welcomed their second grandchild this past summer.

This first work by Christina Briley is a nice take on some classic themes - quest for a lost treasure, the traveling circus, the female fighter - with some unexpected twists. Thaedra is a well-realized protagonist that we care about, and the writing is well done. The raven coronet doesn't give POWER directly, but rather extreme charisma - a nice variation, and leads to a surprising conclusion - read the book to find out what.
